Legal Director, UK & Ireland
- Based in the Maidenhead office with 3/2 flexible working options.
- Reporting to the Area Counsel, Europe.

The role:
A director level senior lawyer with significant experience either from private practice or in house is required to provide commercial legal advice and counsel directly to AbbVie’s business operations in the UK and Ireland.
Working closely with the UK legal team, the role will be responsible for the provision of legal advice focused on business-oriented solutions in line with business priorities. The role will set the legal strategy for the various affiliates and execute that strategy working closely with cross matrix business partners. The individual will be a permanent member of the UK Leadership Team (ALT) and provide virtual support to the Irish GM and AMT.
The range of legal matters that the team covers is broad and includes legal market access issues, competition law, procurement law, supply chain regulation, pharmaceutical regulatory/advertising law, risk management, clinical trials and general commercial law and drafting. With respect to the latter, this includes the negotiation and preparation of an extensive range of significant agreements including supply, homecare, and distribution.
Highlighted responsibilities:
- Responsible for the legal team and provide supervision and delegation of work within the team to meet business requirements.
- Lead the legal elements of the integration of Allergan in the UK and Ireland.
- Resolve complex legal issues (particularly in cross-functional or cross border projects).
- Be expected to gain an excellent knowledge of AbbVie’s businesses and knowledge of the broader business impact of decisions made; be expected to keep abreast of changes in laws that affect client areas and represent AbbVie externally to various stakeholders.
- Model AbbVie behaviors and ways of working through setting a positive culture in the team.
- Resolve legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise.
- Represent AbbVie on the ABPI Legal Expert Network Committee.
- Develop tools and processes to effectively manage legal work and requests for legal work.
- Train the business on key legal developments and areas and develop practical checklists and working tools for the business to facilitate their work.
Qualifications & experience:
- Previous experience of the pharmaceutical industry is required. In house experience is preferred.
- Understanding and experience in the following areas is desirable:
- Commercial & contract law (with national and cross-border contracts)
- Public Procurement & Tenders
- National and EU competition law
- Pharmaceutical Advertising law
- Compliance – ABPI Code regulation
- Pharmaceutical Regulatory law
- General understanding/experience in Intellectual Property (patents, trademarks, copyright)
- Litigation practice and procedure
- Product Liability law
- Data protection
- The individual needs to be highly motivated and enthusiastic with demonstrated initiative, adaptability and integrity.
- Strong communication skills and a cultural sensitivity to working in a multi-national company and the ability to lead cross functional teams.
