The role as Behaviour Support Worker:
Your day to day as a Behaviour Support Worker will involve assisting the students in their everyday activities in the classroom. Many of these students have struggles with childhood trauma and this can add in extra struggles with anxiety, depression and stress. This thus impacts their learning in a negative way. They need an individual to come in and support them with regulating and processing their emotions so that their behaviour and school work is not affected.
You will have the advantage of being supported by the class teacher – but you will also be supporting the classroom as a whole. You will be involved in helping set up for lessons, supervise outdoor activities such as PE and outdoor learning, as well as helping to manage general classroom behaviour. You may also support students on either a 1:1 basis or in a small group.
The Successful Behaviour Support Worker:
As a successful Behaviour Support Worker, you will have qualities that ensure you are calm but also resilient. You will be proactive and be able to support these students with a positive and enthusiastic outlook. You should be able to make the learning environment fun and engaging to ensure that students are interested. You will have some experience with supporting students who have behaviour or other needs in the classroom but this is not essential. What is most important to the school hiring is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
