About the role

As a Senior Production and Outfit Engineer, you will be involved in every stage of design process of various types of specialised, light weight vessels. You will have opportunity to influence designs and team processes to improve designs, build quality and team efficiency. Your day-to-day work will include 2D and 3D vessel design for construction, outfit and mechanical systems, quality assurance of construction, outfit drawings and production models as well as projects technical leadership, customer interaction and support with business development activities.

In your role you will be also looking after Ship Constructor design software interacting with software developer regarding tools improvements and ensuring implementation of any new features within the production team.

The role sits within the wider Marine Engineering capability. The role will require supporting the wider capability across BMT in terms of the best use of resource, tools, training, etc. This also means there are options to be involved in work across the wider capability.

The Production and Outfit team is currently working in hybrid model meeting twice a week in BMT’s Southampton office. Remote working arrangements will be considered.

About you

You will have a minimum off ten years relevant design experience in the commercial and/or defence marine industry for vessels from 15 - 70m. Professional Membership (Incorporated/Chartered) of a related professional body is desirable.

You will be competent in fundamental marine design tasks and have experience in the use of a variety of construction materials, the ability to optimise the structural design for buildability and weight reduction for different hull form types vessels, maritime operations, whole vessel design, statutory regulations and Classification / Code regulations/rules, and arrangement drawings.

You will have detailed knowledge and advance skills in 2D and 3D CAD software, preferably Ship Constructor.

You'll be commercially aware, ensuring that works are being carried out and completed to an appropriate standard, level of detail and to the required timeframe. You will produce clear and well-presented drawings and plans to a suitable quality and standard. A high degree of initiative and self-drive is essential for this rewarding role, in order to meet agreed targets and deliverable deadlines.

You will also have sound verbal and written communication skills and be able to liaise with the customer as required.

Experience of supervising/line managing others is required noting there are less senior members of the team.
