Job overview

The therapy assistant will support the work of the Occupational Therapist and Speech and Language Therapists in working with adults with learning disabilities in both LSCFT inpatient settings and the community. They will be an effective member of the Specialist Community Learning Disability Team; working within the individual packages of care.

The post holder will have experience of working within patient facing roles, possibly alongside or with Occupational Therapists and/or Speech and Language Therapists, working with people with learning disabilities including those with complex needs.

The post holder will work under the direction of a qualified Occupational Therapist and Speech and Language Therapist within the Specialist Network, specifically working with the individual packages of care. The assistant will be required to carry out interventions as required by the therapists to support treatment programmes devised by a qualified therapist.

The post holder will work with a delegated caseload working within the service user’s homes. 

The assistant will be required to work closely with the service user to carry out therapy techniques and treatments, to demonstrate these to service users / families and or carers.  The therapy assistant will be required, to carry out detailed observations and feedback responses to therapists.  The assistant will be working on an individual basis and may be required to support delivery of training by the specialist learning disability team.

Main duties of the job

As part of our service developments, we are developing an inpatient service line within the learning disability services. Initially we will be supporting 4 inpatients at Whalley with a future additional acute LD inpatient service to complete the line.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Therapy Assistant for the LD inpatient service to provide support to the 4 individuals at the Whalley site.

This post will provide support to both senior Occupational Therapists and to Senior Speech and Language Therapists, providing the successful applicant with a wide variety of experience and varied duties working as a valued member of the MDT.

If you are an enthusiastic Therapy Assistant with experience of supporting people with behaviours that challenge and with complex needs, this post offers an exciting opportunity to develop clinical skills and further shape the development of the service.

You will receive regular clinical & professional supervision from senior Occupational Therapy / Speech and Language Therapy staff and you will also benefit from being a member of the Learning Disability AHP Specialty as well as the wider community within LSCFT.
