Position Information

Walgett Community College is located 290 kilometres north-west of Dubbo, near the junctions of the Barwon and Namoi Rivers. The High School has a Year 7-12 enrolment of 100 students, including approximately 96% Aboriginal students. The High School Campus offers two trade training centres that deliver courses in hospitality, metal and engineering, and construction.

Walgett Community College offers a range of programs that support students to learn about their identity and culture, improve wellbeing and build expectations for success. The school is part of the Connected Communities Strategy. Connected Communities is a strategy to drive improved educational outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people. The strategy positions schools as community hubs that broaden the influence of the community and school leadership in the delivery of key services that support children and young people from birth through school into further training, study and employment.

The Head Teacher Mentor will lead the support for early career permanent, temporary and casual teachers in Connected Communities schools. The Head Teacher Mentor will support teachers to strengthen their practice through an explicit, structured program of professional development, coaching, classroom observation, demonstration, team teaching and individualised professional feedback. The Head Teacher Mentor role will work closely with other executive to strengthen a positive performance and development culture across the school, aligned to the values of the Connected Communities strategy.

The Head Teacher Mentor does not have an allocated teaching timetable, however will work directly in classrooms supporting other teachers for at least half the teaching load of an executive teacher. While the Head Teacher Mentor does not replace the supervisory function of existing executive, particularly in relation to teacher accreditation, they will play a key role in supporting teachers with accreditation requirements.
