Job description
SCAS covers the counties of Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, an area of 4,600 sq. miles with a resident population of around 4 million. Key to the delivery of these services will be through the expansion of specialist clinical roles, one of which is the Specialist Practitioner This role helps us to provide high quality, patient focused care and to support clinical leadership across the operational teams. We are therefore seeking applications from Band 6 Paramedics who have the relevant pre-hospital operational clinical experience and hold a IHCD/FuturaQuals Emergency Driving qualification.
SCAS is offering this opportunity to experienced paramedics, who are enthusiastic, dynamic and highly motivated. Applicants must participate in collaborative and portfolio working opportunities as required; as well as being excellent communicators with effective influencing and negotiating skills. You will be working with multi-disciplinary teams across the NHS landscape, in order to ensure that appropriate care is provided for patients.
Training will be undertaken at Higher Education Level 7 as a Trainee Specialist Practitioner over a minimum of 2 years. Some study will be required in your own time.
This position requires trainee specialist practitioners to work across frontline and collaborative projects both internal and external to the Trust. It is a diverse role and as a trainee there will be academic study required alongside frontline and collaborative work.
The specialist will be responsible for the care of the patient including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, discharge and/or referral.
The specialist will be responsible for administering and supplying medicines, in line with Patient Group Directions. You will be expected to demonstrate evidence of taking personal responsibility for your own professional development, clinical leadership in an operational pre-hospital environment and have a strong desire to support and guide colleagues in other clinical roles. Applicants should be able to display sound clinical knowledge, including evidence of history taking and clinical triage in a sensitive manner, providing assessment, advice and treatment in line with clinical protocols and using professional judgement, and to show that they can work as part of a team or autonomously.

South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust provides a range of emergency, urgent care and non-emergency healthcare services, along with commercial logistics services.

To continue to practice operationally in line with the Job Description of a
Paramedic when not undertaking Specialist Paramedic placements, prior to agreed competency sign offs to undertake specialist skills unsupervised.
To practice to the appropriate specialist level in line with training, subject to agreed competency sign off and demonstration of suitable clinical experience as new skills are attained.
To undertake duties in the Emergency Operations Centres/Clinical Hubs, in a clinical advisory capacity, triaging and prioritising emergency and urgent calls to determine appropriate Service responses. This includes assessment and co-ordination of clinical advice calls from operational ambulance crews and responders.
To engage and progress with the planned placements and programme of
education at an associated Higher Education Institution (HEI) or education centre as required.
Willingness to participate in and undertake collaborative rotational working partnerships within the wider health care system – urgent care, primary care, community care. Willingness to undertake rotational working within other departments in the Trust for example Clinical Coordination Centre/Urgent Care Desk.
Ensure that the appropriate manager is kept informed of progression &
results, bringing items of concern or difficulty to the attention of the line
manager in a timely manner.
Undertake advanced patient assessment, treatments and discharge in line
with appropriate guidelines under the supervision and direction of an
appropriate mentor during clinical placements.
Maintain factual and accurate records, under direct supervision by an
appropriate mentor during clinical placements, as required by the Trust or hosting organisation.
To be of a smart appearance at all times incorporating appropriate
SCAS/HEI/Placement regulations to the wearing of uniform.
To work with patients, educators, colleagues and mentors in a professional, calm and caring manner.
