We have an exciting locum opportunity for a Prison Psychiatrist with UK experience to join our team.
Location: Nottingham
Pay rate (Assignment rate): £123 per hour
Contract Length: Ongoing
Shift Pattern: Full time
Duties:
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations of inmates to diagnose mental health disorders and assess their mental state
- Develop individualised treatment plans for inmates based on their psychiatric diagnosis, history, and needs, considering factors such as medication management, therapy, and rehabilitation programs
- Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications for inmates with mental health disorders, adjusting dosages and medications as needed and ensuring compliance with treatment regimens
- Provide crisis intervention services to inmates experiencing acute psychiatric crises, including suicidal ideation, severe agitation, and psychotic episodes
- Lead group therapy sessions for inmates with similar mental health concerns, facilitating discussions, teaching coping skills, and promoting peer support
- Conduct individual therapy sessions with inmates to address specific mental health issues, such as trauma, substance abuse, depression, or anxiety
- Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals within the prison, including psychologists, social workers, nurses, and correctional officers, to ensure coordinated care for inmates
- Assess the risk of violence or self-harm posed by inmates with mental health disorders and develop risk management plans to mitigate these risks
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records of psychiatric assessments, treatment plans, interventions, and progress notes, adhering to legal and ethical standards of documentation
- Provide expert testimony in court proceedings, parole hearings, or disciplinary hearings regarding inmates' mental health status, treatment needs, and risk factors
- Provide education and training to prison staff on topics related to mental health awareness, crisis de-escalation techniques, and interacting effectively with inmates with mental illness
- Engage in research activities related to mental health in correctional settings, and contribute to the development and implementation of mental health programs and policies within the prison
- Coordinate referrals for inmates requiring specialised mental health services not available within the prison, ensuring continuity of care upon release or transfer to other facilities
- Adhere to ethical guidelines and principles of psychiatry in all aspects of practice, including maintaining confidentiality, respecting autonomy, and advocating for the rights and well-being of inmates
Requirements for the Psychiatrist role:
- Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse populations of inmates, recognising and addressing the impact of cultural factors on mental health and treatment outcomes
- Recent UK experience working within a similar role
- Relevant qualification/registration
