Principal Lawyer - Litigation

Location

Darlington, County Durham | United Kingdom

Job description

We are looking for a qualified lawyer to lead and manage the Councilandrsquo;s Litigation Team, one of three teams within Legal Services.

andnbsp;

A rare opportunity has arisen for you andnbsp;to join Legal Services at Darlington Borough Council as the Principal Lawyer - Litigation. This will involve managing a team dealing with prosecutions, civil litigation, injunctions, housing, licensing and employment matters.

This post is the main point of contact for all criminal litigation, licensing and anti-social behaviour related matters within the Council and therefore it is essential that applicants have experience of conducting criminal litigation and attending and presenting cases at courts, panels, hearings and tribunals.

andnbsp;

As the role involves managing the other aspects of litigation also covered by the team, a working knowledge or practical experience of dealing with work in at least one other area of law that the team covers (as set out above) is also an essential requirement.

andnbsp;

Our Litigation Team is small and the workload is varied. There will therefore be opportunities to gain wider legal experience beyond criminal litigation. If you are a team player with good listening, coaching and leadership skills then we would love to hear from you.

The role offers a great opportunity for a lawyer who already has experience in some areas of the teamandrsquo;s work to further develop.andnbsp; We are not expecting fluency in all areas but the successful person will need to be able to develop an understanding of all areas of work and be able to oversee and help members of the team as necessary.andnbsp;

Experience of working in local government and/or senior officers and elected Members is desirable, but not essential, as there will be many opportunities to develop local government understanding.

Candidates who have gained their legal experience outside of local government are welcome to apply as well as those working in local government.

andnbsp;

The working arrangements are flexible. The office base is the Town Hall in Darlington with the opportunity to work from home on an agile basis, in line with the requirements of the team. You will need to work within traveling distance of the courts and Town hall

andnbsp;

This role is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
