Nestled in a captivating location, YHA The Sill Hadrians Wall is a stunning new purpose built 88 bed hostel just a short 10 minute walk to the historic Hadrians Wall. We are attached to the Sill Discovery Centre where regular fairs and events take place throughout the year. The area immediately surrounding the hostel is great for walking and running and is situated on both the Hadrians wall way and Pennine Way. If history is your thing then the Vindolanda roman fort and museum is a short walk away, and many roman forts linked along Hadrians wall. The historic towns and cities of Hexham, Carlisle are a short drive away, and if you are feeling in need of some city fun so is Newcastle (there is an excellent bus and train service to these areas as well, from the front of the hostel). The small town of Haltwhistle (the centre of Britain!) is 4 miles away and has shops, cafes and pubs.

We have the renowned twice brewed pub next door that has, in addition to its award winning ales brewed on site, a planetarium as well. This is as we are located in in an area  awarded ‘International Dark Sky Park (Gold Tier)’ status, so the universe is also at your fingertips.

Join Our Team as Duty Manager - Shaping Exceptional Hostel Experiences

The Role: Supporting Excellence in Hostel Operations

As a Duty Manager, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the management of an operational budget and the delivery of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). You will also be engaged in various customer-facing duties across the hostel, ensuring all guests and visitors have an outstanding YHA experience.

Your Responsibilities

• Guiding and supporting team members working in all areas of the hostel, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
• Utilising our systems for efficient guest check-ins, check-outs and other management functions.
• Carrying out cleaning and housekeeping duties, maintaining a clean and comfortable environment for our guests.
• Assisting in the kitchen and serving food and drinks with warmth and hospitality, enhancing the dining experience, while engaging in authentic, inclusive conversations. Suggesting enjoying dinner with us or offering a beverage or dessert as you assist with table service, ensuring a diverse and welcoming experience for all guests.
• Deputising for the Hostel/Deputy Manager, managing the daily hostel operation in their absence.

What Skills and Experience We Value

Our Duty Manager role requires flexibility to cover different shifts and tasks. While prior experience in a face-to-face customer service role is an advantage, it's not essential. However, experience in hospitality or customer service, especially in managing and delivering high-quality service, is highly beneficial.

Desirable qualifications include Food Safety Level 2 and APLH Level 2, but they are not mandatory. Essential requirements include experience in managing varying pressures, including significant workload demands, and team management.

We highly value lived experiences just as much as previous skills and knowledge. We offer a comprehensive induction, ongoing training, and further development. While some of our roles may have specific skills requirements, we encourage team members from diverse backgrounds to apply.

Good communication skills and basic IT proficiency are advantageous, and excellent time management is essential in our dynamic environment.
