Purpose of Role
Responsible for meeting the operational and maintenance commitments of the hospital, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of decontamination and sterilisation services, ensuring compliance to all relevant legislation, standards and guidance is met.
Job Description
Your strong leadership and organisational skills will be essential as you will be responsible for the practical implementation and operation of the Trusts policies and procedures relating to the safe and effective engineering aspects of the decontamination equipment, including the implementation and day to day operation of the permit to work system.
You will collaborate with Decontamination Management team, suppliers, and specialist contractors to deliver a comprehensive, efficient, and responsive maintenance, testing, service, repair, and installation service that aligns with the users' needs and exceeds industry standards.
Responsibilities
Review and certify decontamination equipment validation, re-validation including weekly, quarterly, and yearly periodic test data via regular audit and attendance at decontamination equipment supplier quarterly review meetings.
To develop and operate a permit to work system for all competent persons attending site in line with current legislation.
Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication links with multi- disciplinary Decontamination Team and equipment manufacturer/supplier personnel.
Monitor and document maintenance and testing results to identify potential issues and address them promptly. Understand the requirements to carry out field based validations, trouble shoot and create action plans in relation to:
-Periodic Testing
-Final rinse water analysis
-Microbiological performance qualification analysis
-Equipment repairs
Attend all relevant meetings and provide feedback on decontamination equipment, water quality and systems including trend analysis, audit data and validation reports.
Provide efficient and effective supervision of the decontamination competent person and all other relevant persons relating to the team.
Work closely with suppliers and specialist contractors to source necessary equipment, materials, and expertise required for decontamination services.
Establish strong working relationships to ensure a reliable and timely supply chain.
Implement a proactive maintenance and testing schedule for decontamination equipment, ensuring that all items are in optimal working condition at all times.
Coordinate and oversee the service and repair of decontamination equipment to minimise downtime and maintain continuous operations.
Provide expert advice and support to hospital staff regarding decontamination practices, equipment usage, and infection control measures.
Stay updated on industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to decontamination and sterilisation services.
Ensure the department operates in full compliance with all applicable regulations.
Conduct regular training sessions for the decontamination team members to enhance their understanding of decontamination techniques, infection control, and safety protocols.
Essential Qualifications/Skills
Professional/academic qualification at degree level or demonstrable extensive experience in medical device decontamination and sterilisation processes ideally in a healthcare/hospital setting.
Test person sterilisers HTM 01-01
Test person washer disinfectors including endoscope washer disinfectors HTM 01-06.
Authorised Person (Decontamination) certificate.
Thorough knowledge of all relevant decontamination legislation, standards, and guidance.
Experience of periodic validations on decontamination equipment.
Strong leadership, planning, and organisational skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multi-skill working teams.
Familiarity with decontamination equipment, testing, and maintenance processes.
Flexible schedule and willingness to work on-call or extended hours if necessary.
Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
Strong level of organisation and management skills.
