Job description
The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) will deliver Tempest, the RAF’s 6th Generation Combat Air system that will replace the Eurofighter Typhoon fleet in the 2035 timescales.
Within GCAP, Leonardo UK is leading the development of the Integrated Sensing and Non-Kinetic Effects (ISANKE) for Tempest. ISANKE encompasses the advanced electronic systems that will perform tactical sensing, data fusion and self-protection, enabling Tempest to survive and operate effectively in highly contested environments.
The Opportunity
Leonardo UK is seeking applicants for the ISANKE Chief Engineer position in GCAP. Reporting to the Future Combat Air Sector Chief Engineer, the successful candidate will be the UK System Design Authority for the ISANKE technical solution. This role will place the candidate at the very heart of the Future Combat Air engineering effort within Leonardo UK, spanning multiple complex systems and technologies. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues in Italy and Japan to deliver the ISANKE solution.
This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to play a fundamental role in a defence programme of critical national importance, and to shape the future of Combat Air capability in the UK.
What You Will Do
- Reporting to the Future Combat Air Sector Chief Engineer, you will be the Leonardo UK System Design Authority and Company Technical Signatory for the ISANKE product suite on GCAP.
- Supported by Subject Matter Experts, you will represent Leonardo UK in the GCAP environment to design and deliver the ISANKE solution with our international partners, managing trade-offs associated with performance, cost and technical risk
- You will provide technical direction to ISANKE development activities, and operate as the senior technical authority at design reviews.
- Working closely with the Chief Systems Engineer, Design Integrity and Senior Technical Specialists, you will ensure that the ISANKE solution meets requirements for performance, security, safety and airworthiness certification.
- You will help to inform technology research & development activities within the Future Combat Air sector.
- You will help to develop the next generation of technical leadership within the Future Combat Air sector.
You Really Must Have
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Engineering or a related subject.
- A strong technical background in the design, qualification and certification of airborne tactical sensor systems.
- Significant depth of technical leadership experience spanning the entire engineering lifecycle, including systems and platform integration, and the application of relevant design assurance processes and standards e.g. ARP-4754, DO-178 and DO-297.
- A structured approach to technical problem solving, excellent communication skills, and experience of providing technical leadership to engineering teams.
- On the path to achieving professional registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Note: This role requires the candidate to have, or be able to achieve, DV security clearance. For national security reasons the majority of the work will need to be conducted on-site at our facility in Capability Green, Luton, with occasional travel to other UK locations and overseas.
