Roles:
Polling station staff ensure that voters are able to cast their vote in secret, free from influence and in a calm atmosphere. If you are a good communicator, methodical and quick to learn, apply to work in one of the many polling stations across Lewes and Eastbourne.
Count staff work in a team to sort and count all ballot papers after voting finishes. Some counts start at 10 o’clock in the evening, others during weekdays or occasionally over a weekend. If you are methodical, numerate and enjoy working as part of team, apply to work as a count assistant.
Presiding Officers
Presiding Officers are responsible for the management of a polling station and are responsible for the conduct of the ballot. Organise the set-up of the polling station and enable electors to cast their vote in secret and without influence. Maintain the secrecy of the ballot. Comply with instructions set out by the Returning Officer or their staff.
Hours of Poll: Polling Stations are open from 7am – 10pm. Staff are required to arrive at the polling station by 6.30am to set up and may not leave until the equipment has been cleared down after close of poll.
Payment: In the region of £298 plus an additional payment for undertaking training.
Main Responsibilities
Liaise with polling station key-holder or contact regarding opening and closing arrangements on polling day and undertake a visit to the venue.
Collect the ballot box(es) and supplies at the designated time, check contents and keep secure until polling day.
Make contact with poll clerks in advance of polling day to check on arrangements.
Be responsible for setting up the polling station and ensure the building is returned to a neat and secure state after close of poll.
Be responsible for assigning tasks to and overseeing the work of the Poll Clerks, ensuring smooth running of the polling station throughout the day.
Engage with electors, political party representatives and candidates in a helpful, polite and professional manner.
Using a tablet, complete the ballot paper account(s) and all other documentation in accordance with the Returning Officer’s instructions.
Be responsible for packing up the polling station, with the help of Poll Clerks, and ensuring the venue is locked and/or secure prior to leaving.
Deliver the ballot box(es) and all other documentation/equipment to the count centre in a timely manner.
Adhere to the relevant secrecy requirements at all times.
You will be working for approximately 17 hours on polling day, including the delivery of the ballot box after close of poll. Additionally, you will need to collect your ballot box prior to election day. You will need to provide your own refreshments and take appropriate breaks where possible. Polling station staff are not permitted to leave the polling station at any time during polling hours.
