ROLE SUMMARY:

St Anthony’s School for Boys is looking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of French from September 2024. The post-holder should be prepared to teach all year groups from Reception up to and including Year 6. Applications are welcome from experienced teachers or those new to the profession. 

St Anthony’s aims to instil a love of learning and capture young, inquiring minds. The post-holder will be an outstanding practitioner using a range of teaching methods and resources to promote knowledge and understanding of the French language. The school is looking to integrate digital learning into the traditional curriculum and the successful candidate will be enthusiastic about deploying technology to maximise learning outcomes. 

The teacher of French will be line managed by the Head of Languages and work alongside the teachers of Latin. It would be an advantage for candidates to offer a second language in addition to French. The successful candidate may be delegated by the Head of Faculty responsibility for certain year groups or Key Stages, which will be important for professional and career development. The Faculty system allows for language teachers, irrespective of their specialism, to share good practice with each other whilst promoting a sense of common endeavour.

Hours of work: 35 hours per week, 8.30am until 4.30pm.  

Salary: Dependent on skills and experience, and in accordance with the Alpha Plus Pay Scale.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning, Teaching and Class Management:

• Ensure effective teaching of whole classes, groups and individuals so that teaching objectives are met, momentum and challenge are maintained, and best use is made of teaching time.
• Plan lesson and sequences of lessons to meet pupils’ individual learning needs and plan effectively to ensure that pupils have the opportunity to meet their potential, taking account of the needs of pupils who are:
• underachieving;
• very able.
• Secure a high standard of pupil behaviour in the classroom, through establishing appropriate rules and high expectations of discipline which pupils respect and use a range of appropriate strategies for teaching and classroom management.
• Identify pupils who have special educational needs, and know where to get help in order to give positive and targeted support. Plan effectively, where applicable, to meet the needs of those pupils with special educational needs and prepare, implement, monitor and review individual education plans.
• Design and adapt long, medium and short term plans for all schemes of work taught.

Pupil Achievement:

Teachers should be able to demonstrate that, as a result of their teaching, their pupils achieve well relative to the pupils’ prior attainment. This could be shown in marks or grades in any relevant standardised tests or school-based assessments or through samples of work.

Monitoring & Assessment:

• Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use this assessment to inform future teaching;
• Mark and monitor pupils’ class and homework providing constructive oral and written feedback, setting targets for future progress;
• Set clear targets for improvement of pupils’ achievement and monitor pupils’ progress towards those targets;
• Administer and mark regular summative assessments as agreed by school policy.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

Essential:

• The teacher of French will be excited about playing an integral role within the new Languages Faculty structure, including the opportunity to teach French from Reception to Year 8;
• An interest in overseeing the provision of French within the Faculty, including planning high quality schemes of work for students in Reception to Year 8;
• The desire to support students in Years 7 and 8 with French Scholarship applications, including inputting into references where appropriate;
• A commitment to providing morning and after-school sessions to support Scholarship students;
• The ability to provide at least two hobbies per academic year to all students at St. Anthony’s;
• Fulfil the role of Form Teacher as directed by the Head of House Pastoral, adopting a holistic oversight of all tutees;

Desirable:

• The ability to teach more than one Modern Foreign Language.
