The Role Context
Having retained TfL (and GLA) in a competitive pitch, Wavemaker has a mandate to help make London cleaner, greener and fairer in a relationship with new focus and renewed energy. The Role within Wavemaker
The Managing Partner has overall responsibility for setting the direction for their Client, ensuring Wavemaker becomes their most valued partner and that Wavemaker maximises return from that business.
- To best understand client’s ambitions and business, and to leverage Wavemaker’s role within their business. Ultimately to own the roadmap for client’s business and relationship growth and Wavemaker’s growth as their most valuable business partner.
- To connect the skills of the agency together to best serve client’s needs.
- To coach their team to deliver bigger/better solutions for their clients and to help them meet their potential.
- To champion the best of planning and act as leaders for the department and the business.
- To be responsible for department wide/agency wide progression through the leadership of department/agency wide initiatives (e.g. talent, work, creativity, data, digital, collaboration).
About the role
In this role you’ll be responsible for:
Client Servicing
- Has the ability to build senior client and agency relationships, has gravitas and credibility with senior leadership teams. Someone clients respect and value and want on their business. Is good at influencing and has the skills to turn objections into positive outcomes.
- Has a strong profile in the industry, actively promotes and increases Wavemaker visibility wherever appropriate. Is a role model for the business, representing it positively internally and externally. Is always an advocate of Wavemaker and its ambitions. Drives Wavemaker culture throughout the agency. Has a high level of enthusiasm, cares about the business and wants to make a difference.
Strategy & Planning
- Clearly defines and articulates vision, goals, and tasks. Oversees the planning process, champions the use of Wavemaker planning tools and embraces creativity in the approach to client challenges. Is an expert in media planning, strategically strong, can clearly identify and articulate a communication strategy to address client’s business challenges.
- Is passionate about creativity and is always seeking new stimulus.
Campaign Management & Performance
- Organises agency resources to ensure best in class delivery across a multi-function team.
- Instils a learning culture, constantly driving better results for our clients.
Commercial
- Lead role in maximisingWavemakers commercial opportunity with clients. Has a full understanding of GroupM and is able to talk coherently and compellingly to clients, the industry, and our teams. Demonstrates a thorough understanding and passion for clients' business. Proactively identifies what Wavemaker can do to support clients' growth strategies, has a long-term vision for their clients, and reviews strategies for maximising the agency's revenue and growth. Manages agency resource to deliver the most effective and efficient client deliveries and profitability of each piece of business. Thinks about outcomes for the whole agency, not just their team.
- Has regularly led new business projects and pitches. Can lead a pitch, write an RFP and lead a strategic work stream.
Team Management
- Experienced at leading a team to a very high standard and keeping people motivated and engaged. Excels at training and coaching individuals and getting the best out of people.
Is a visible leader within the Client Leadership department, taking ownership of initiatives to drive positive change in the agency.
- Sets ambition for team. Provides direction under pressure or when in challenging conditions.
- Oversees a training, development and feedback programme that ensures the ongoing development of all levels of seniority within their team. Provides their people with clear personal objectives, structure, and regular reviews. Champions a hunger to do more, continuous improvement, and personal development. Motivates people to perform better and checks output to ensure quality. Takes responsibility for the people in their team getting the right results.
- Builds relationships quickly and fosters collaboration between different Wavemaker departments to produce brilliant work for our clients. Manages and resolves conflict/tension without fuss to deliver better outcomes.
Leadership & Product Development (senior level only)
- Has earned recognition as a leader of agency and department initiatives. Able to employ a broad range of leadership styles depending on situation. Technical Skills
- Has a high knowledge of Wavemaker/industry data tools and uses them to identify key opportunities and solutions for their clients. Is highly skilled when discussing data with clients. Positively promotes the use of data within their team and insists on its application in all work to generate insight and improve performance.
- Can converse confidently about digital, its multiple platforms and applications. Takes the lead digitally, doesn’t hand digital over to the ‘digital people’ but consults with them for advice. Capitalises on opportunities to further their knowledge.
The Role Specifics
The role requires both pronounced and nuanced leadership skills. The job requires tenacity, positivity, energy, ambition, and cultural intelligence.
- You will own Wavermaker’s relationship with senior TfL clients.
- The primary responsibility of the role is to ensure Wavemaker deliver growth for TfL across a wide range of specialisms including Client Leadership, Client and Agency Relationship, Strategy, Planning, Activation, OOH Brilliance and Evaluation.
- Be responsible for TfL and Wavemaker’s push for 2024/2025 Awards (media industry but also Marketing Society, IPA and Effie).
- Chair a regular client meeting: Strategic Hub.
- Champion diversity and inclusion – in terms of planning, team recruitment but also team involvement. This role is responsible for ensuring ALL team voices are heard and everyone feels listened to.
The Team
There are 25 people who work on TfL.
You will:
- Be a key part of our strategic planning team working directly with Strategy Partner David Graham and Strategy Lead Joe Wood.
- Manage a full team of Communications Directors, Planning Lead, Managers and Execs.
- Play a lead role in defining the future direction of the TfL
The On System Estate
TfL have an On-System media estate worth about £60m and a unique relationship with Global Media and JCD.
The TfL estate covers;
- OOH Circuits (across LU, Bus, Tram, LO, Elizabeth line), Press Circuits (Metro), Web Circuits (TfL.co.uk)
- OOH Contract (with Global & JCD)
- Radio Contract (with Global)
- Plus and new ‘Road User Circuit’ – to be created post pitch win
In addition, you will lead on the implementation of circa £10,000,000 of cash budget.
