Job description
Ensure all pre-graduate learners are supported in becoming competent and capable practitioners by employing appropriate development programmes and/or local competency frameworks. Demonstrate clinical and practice expertise through personal practice and by leading by example. Act as an advocate for work based learning within the Trust, supporting staff and their inter-professional learning practice. Explore and exploit opportunities for learning, development and change, facilitate staff ownership of change and ensure robust systems of evaluation are in operation. Provide and participate in supporting and teaching all supervisors and assessors involved in the training and development of pre-graduate learners in practice. To give professional support to the multi-disciplinary teams and to participate in performance development for all pre-graduate learners in collaboration with service areas and department managers. Develop, deliver and evaluate structured training sessions for all pre-graduate learners in the delivery of fundamental patient care. Responsibilities for Staff Development Assess and benchmark acceptable standards of practice. Identify good practice and foster a culture which celebrates and shares good practice. Work with groups /individuals to identify specific learning/training needs and development action plans. Assist and support a structured learning and development plan for those pre-graduate learners who need to be performance managed in collaboration with the ward/department manager / professional lead and pre-graduate development leads. Participate in the formation of development objectives for individuals incorporating any knowledge and skills frameworks, monitoring and facilitating gateway accessibility. Work with groups and individuals to embed evidence based, quality practice. Provide information, guidance, advice, support and recommendations to improve service and training quality. Assist and support assessors and supervisors of all pre-graduate learners in effective feedback including clinical skill assessments. Encourage reflective practice in line with clinical governance and nurse revalidation. Participate in critical incident analysis and encourage others to do the same. Investigate complaints as required, ensuring organisational and individual learning as appropriate. Provide timely constructive feedback for staff and person specific action plans. Identify and co-ordinate opportunities for staff development or experience. Work with individuals to recognise theory or practice gaps or poor performance and identify recovery action plans for addressing any issues identified. Encourage and support staff to raise concerns through incident reporting, freedom to speak you, whistle blowing policy. To ensure that all health care records demonstrate clearly the NMC Guidelines for Records and Record keeping. Maintain accurate documentation, both electronic and paper, in order to ensure timely and effective communication. Comply with the Data Protection Act to ensure appropriate action is taken to ensure confidentiality and protection of patient information. Maintain the data base of mentors and/or preceptors and their qualifications as applicable in line with NMC Standards. Maintain the process by which all staff undergoing supervision and assessment as applicable are monitored ensuring timely sign off. Educate all pre-graduate learners regarding the need for accurate recording of all assessments, planning implementation and evaluation required within their role. Professional Always behave in a manner that upholds the reputation of the nursing profession and the organisation. Be accountable for your own professional practice. Act as a patient advocate at all times. Keep abreast of new health care related developments, ensuring that nursing practice is up to date, evidence based and cost effective. Responsible for own personal and professional development and assist the Ward/ department Manager and/or professional lead in the development of staff as required. Responsible for the development and maintenance of personal professional portfolio. Responsible for own professional registration and revalidation and assist the Ward/Department Managers and professional leads in ensuring that all qualified nurses have valid NMC registration and practise in accordance with NMC code of professional conduct. Attend mandatory and developmental training as identified in the teams annual training plan and personal development plan. Participate in clinical audit, practice research initiatives, quality assurance and clinical governance. Foster good working relationships throughout the organisation within the whole of the multidisciplinary team. Interpersonal Skills To be able to provide and receive complex and sensitive information regarding staff and patients. Work collaboratively with all key stakeholders to facilitate evidence based practice in an environment which continually strives to deliver excellence in healthcare. Be able to communicate to people in a form and manner which is consistent with their level of understanding, culture, background and preferred way of communication. Be able to educate and practice high standards of basic nursing care and knowledge. To support and inspire colleagues working within the relevant field in developing advanced knowledge & skills and competent professional practice. Be able to teach and present to large groups. Employ motivational, persuasive, empathetic and physical communication skills using a wide range of media. Be responsible for the production of and the supervision of others in the production of accurate and complete records consistent with current legislation, policies and procedures. Communicate effectively with the multi-disciplinary and multi agency teams working across statutory & non-statutory settings.
