Job description
AALTO’s Zephyr is a High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) and is the only one of its kind to have demonstrated day/night longevity in the stratosphere. Providing a persistent and adaptable solution, unlike other unmanned aircraft. Its persistence enables a capability of flying continuously for months at a time, at around 70,000 feet, above weather and conventional air traffic.
The newly established entity will become the leading Global HAPS Connectivity as a Service (CaaS) provider for the Mobile and Satellite Network Operator market – connecting the diverse needs of our customers – whether for rural, overlay capacity, disaster recovery or new services provision. In addition, it shall offer Platform as a Service (PaaS) to the Institutional and Military markets for Earth observation, tracking and communications requirements, as well as operating a global fleet of carbon neutral HAPS platforms – powered by sunlight.
Job Purpose:
Working within the AALTO Flight Test Organisation, the UAS Trials Engineer will be responsible for planning and delivery of sub-scale and surrogate Test & Evaluation activities in the UK and overseas. Working predominantly from Farnborough, UK, this role will see the successful candidate deploy within the UK and remote overseas locations on a limited basis to support the ongoing development of our Zephyr air system.
Responsibilities:
Conduct planning and execution of rapid Research & Development trials activities in the UK and overseas
Work collaboratively with the Air Operations and Engineering teams to successfully conduct sub-scale and surrogate trials activities
Manage and develop AALTO’s Small UAS approvals and operational authorisations
Work with engineers and technicians to integrate new systems for test
Manage trial and test requirements across the AALTO Test & Evaluation (T&E) capability
Support the planning of full-scale Zephyr trials activities alongside Flight Test Engineers
As required, support Flight Test Engineers with the conduct of flight test activities
Share and develop best practice to enhance the Flight Test & Evaluation of the Zephyr air system
Essential Experience and Qualifications:
Experience with Small UAS trials or operations
Hold a Level 3 qualification (or higher) in an Engineering discipline
Desirable Experience and Qualifications:
Knowledge of UK and European UAS regulatory environments, particularly Specific Category operations
Aviation experience as flight crew or engineer, either military or civil
Holder of UK General VLOS Certificate (GVC) or other experience as UAS operator / external pilot
Knowledge and experience with common Project Management techniques
Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition systems
Capable of explaining technical details to customers in a concise and expert manner
Data analysis experience using off the shelf packages or self-scripted
