Working For:English Country Gardeners
Senior Gardener required
A new vacancy has arisen on a spectacular private estate near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire for an experienced gardener to work for genuinely warm and welcoming employers. This role will suit an all-rounded horticulturist with drive to utilise their horticultural knowledge and experience on a full time and permanent basis.
The majestic eighteenth-century house is surrounded by 80 acres of land including parkland and paddocks. The main gardens consist of various terraces with different planting schemes, formal bedding, rose borders surrounding the house and a walled kitchen garden with raised beds to grow a variety of fruit and vegetables as well as provides shelter to an area that exemplifies ornamental gardening through each of the four seasons. Great expanses of lawn, mature and young trees, lavender pathways, and ornamental planting all highlight the traditional English landscape.
The senior gardener will work alongside a groundsman to care for the garden with great attention to detail. Outside contractors assist with the parkland and paddocks. Suitable candidates for this role will ideally hold a horticultural qualification and / or practical experience in private estate gardens. The focus of this role is fine horticulture, so excellent plant identification skills are essential in addition to a thorough understanding the seasons. Duties include rotate crops, cultivate, harvest and prune fruit and vegetables in walled garden, general garden maintenance such as lawncare, hedge cutting, leaf collecting, weeding, moss control, manage fruit trees including pruning and general health, pest and disease control, tending to herbaceous borders and topiary and further developing the composting system. The successful candidate will also work with the owners on suggested planting plans.
Applicants should be flexible, energetic and cooperative in nature with a positive and friendly outlook. The owners try to be organic as possible in the garden, though chemicals are used in some areas and therefore some experience of chemical-free gardening methodologies would be helpful as well as spray certificates would be an advantage. Chainsaw certificates would be a plus or the willingness to acquire as the owners would be happy to support the training. Candidates will have a sound understanding of general garden machinery – their use and basic maintenance as well as be confident driving an ATV. Good physical fitness and an eye for detail are required, with an ability to work well within a team as well as alone where necessary.
The role is offered with a competitive salary and a recently refurbished 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom cottage with council tax, utility bills broadband and TV licence covered by the employer.
This is a fabulous opportunity for a skilled horticulturist who is happy to be hands-on and proactive, content working in the garden alone as well as part of a team with good physical fitness and an eye for detail. The role is also open to a couple where the other position would be either to assist on the garden or help with the animals on site.
