Job description

A Vacancy at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will work along 4 well established substantive Consultant psychiatrists who will largely be covering the corresponding CMHT’s.

Both PCMHT’s have a strong Multi-disciplinary team with their own team leader. There are higher trainees attached to both teams who will be expected to work across the PCMHT and CMHT so that they get a wide breadth of experience working in both settings.

The main duties of the consultant are to provide psychiatry consultant leadership and to act as Approved Clinician to N3 and N4, the Primary Care Mental Health Teams and to support the Team leaders and Clinical Service Lead.

Close liaison with primary care will be a key part of the role. You will need to work directly with GPs and other stakeholders. The Lead clinician for community teams, Dr Hugh Williams and the AMD for Lewisham, Dr Zain Sadiq will support you and the team wrt stakeholder engagement and addressing any interface issues.

You will be expected to provide consultant input for the Primary Care Mental Health team

On days when CMHT does not have on site medical cover, it will be expected for the team doctors to be available by phone or email for any urgent advice.

You will work alongside the CMHT consultant psychiatrists who also work for the Neighbourhood, so there is scope for support and cross cover. There is also the benefit of having other consultants with whom you can discuss challenging cases.

The post holder will be expected to provide clinical cover for other Lewisham borough consultants and vice versa.

To provide enthusiastic, and flexible, joint clinical leadership and consultant input into the team, alongside the Clinical Service Lead
• To take consultant responsibility for your sector of the Neighbourhood Mental Health team, acting as Approved Clinician and assessing or supervising assessment and management of patients and devising or helping to devise appropriate treatment plans and medication regimes, providing prompt medical response, and advising and work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team
• To provide consultant input into the Primary Care Mental Health Team, using your expertise to provide advice, liaising closely with GPs and other stakeholders, and providing assessment of complex presentations and creating appropriate management plans
• To offer expert risk assessment and management skills in complex care of people with severe mental illness
• To ensure excellence in the delivery of evidence-based treatments
• To act as a source of support, advice, and information to current or prospective patients and their carers, referrers, team members and other professionals
• In conjunction with the Team Leader, will help to represent the unit at CAG and care pathway meetings and other internal and external meetings where needed.
• To provide reciprocal Approved Clinician cover including under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act for the leave, study leave and sickness of senior medical staff in Lewisham during working hours
• To keep up to date with all developments in research and treatment around acute care pathways and inpatient mental health care
