Job description


East Sexual Health Service are looking for a dynamic Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our bank staff.

The post holder will have highly developed specialist skills and advanced knowledge in contraception and sexual and reproductive health. As an autonomous practitioner they will undertake independent consultations with patients attending sexual health services and designated outreach clinics for contraceptive requirements and STI screening.

The post holder will assess patients (male and female) formulating diagnosis and if appropriate initiating treatments thus being clinically responsible for the whole patient episode of care. The post holder will be involved in the development and delivery of education and training of other staff and students both within the service and the primary care area. They will act as a mentor on a regular basis across all areas Sexual Health Services.

The post holder will take the lead and be responsible for the development and updating of clinical standards, procedures, and Patient Group Directions (PGDs) across sexual health service to further develop nurse led services within sexual health services.

Provide specialist advanced nursing contribution to the clinical management of patients with contraceptive, genitor-urinary or sexual health conditions and working autonomously but with other health professionals.

Offer contraceptive, GUM or other sexual health needs including cervical cytology, EHC, vaccinations, IUCs and implants

Under 16-year-old patients using Fraser Guidelines and local child protection policies and refer if required to the appropriate agencies as per trust

Support the Sexual Health Services Manager implementation of the within Sexual Health working groups and at meetings as appropriate.

Teaching sessions to Sexual Health Service staff, other members of the health care teams

Support nursing staff, pre and post registration students and medical staff during clinical placements within Sexual Health Services and act as a Mentor within the service on a regular

Provide induction, mentorship, appraisal of identified staff and clinical supervision and staff personal development

East Lancashire Sexual Health Service is part of the Pan Lancashire Sexual Health Service, provided by Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Our East Locality has clinics sited across East Lancashire, we offer all age and Under 25s services for clinical services in Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM) and Contraception, which includes all LARC methods of contraception.

We work in partnership with our Blood Bourne Virus Team , the Psychosexual Team as well as our CESH education team and the wider local GP services, safeguarding services and SARC centres to provide a comprehensive level of care and advice to all clients of any age

• To provide a specialist and advanced nursing contribution to the clinical management of patients with contraceptive, Genito-urinary or sexual health conditions whilst working autonomously but in collaboration with other health professionals

• To undertake contraceptive and GUM clinical sessions independently assessing unselected patients, formulating diagnoses and if appropriate initiate treatments under patient group directions, agreed protocols or non-medical prescribing once.

• To be responsible for the follow up care of patients with contraceptive, GUM or other sexual health issue to include common STI’s, HIV testing (using venepuncture or point of care testing) and first and subsequent issuing of methods of

• To assess unselected patients taking sexual histories, carrying out comprehensive clinical examinations on male and female patients including cervical cytology, making presumptive diagnoses of STIs and other related conditions via completing direct microscopy results and clinical examination and then provide treatment (via Patient Group Directions or Non-Medical Prescribing once qualified), education and advice to the patient undertaking partner notification as

• To administer medications, vaccinations, and immunisations, for example hepatitis B in conjunction with clinical protocol and Patient Group

• To undertake training in non-medical prescribing and become an Independent Nurse Prescriber within the service and utilise non-medical prescribing in the management of patients under the care of Sexual Health Services for the treatment of conditions within the practitioner’s scope of competence

• To independently assess patients in order to supply emergency contraception, start and re-issue combined oral and progesterone only contraceptive methods (including the insertion and removal of contraceptive implants)

• Following training and assessment of clinical competence undertake independent assessment of patients to assess their suitability to use IUD’s/IUS’s as a method of contraception and fit and remove these as appropriate.

• To provide leadership by acting as a role model for other nurses within the service and provide specialist and up to date relevant information to other Nurses and Health

• To provide expert advice to sexual health services staff on clinical issues, child protection issues and Fraser Guidelines

• To be a flexible, effective member of the team and provide cover for other relevant staff during absences

• Lead and develop local clinical policies and procedure in relation to sexual health services, particularly enhancing ‘nurse led’ services across all areas of sexual health

• Be responsible for the development, implementing and updating of Patient Group Directions (PGDs) across sexual health services and ensure that staff are appropriately trained to use relevant PGDs within the
