Job description
About us
Newcastle City Council is a global leader in tackling the climate crisis, and we are now looking for an exceptional leader to shape our strategy and help us deliver our ambition to be net zero by 2030.
In 2019 the Council declared a climate emergency, and since 2022 achieving net zero has been one of the administration’s three priorities.
Some of our achievements to date include:
- Municipal Journal Awards finalist for leadership in responding to the climate emergency (2023)
- A-graded city in CDP's global ranking for tackling climate change in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023
- Secured over £70m in external funding for a range of decarbonisation projects
- Ranked as 4th among single-tier local authorities in Climate Emergency’s Climate Action Scorecard
We are now looking for someone to build on our successes and accelerate our progress to net zero by 2030.
The role As our principal advisor you will work closely with the Cabinet Member for Connected, Clean City to shape the council’s strategy for net zero, and to enable and drive its delivery. You will provide visible and empowering leadership to not just our climate change team, but the organisation as a whole, working alongside colleagues in a range of service areas such as Transport, Planning, Operations, and Housing, to support their work to reduce emissions and deliver our net zero 2030 target.
You will work with partners in the city, the region, and nationally, to identify opportunities to develop innovative projects and programmes, and to secure funding to deliver them.
You will play a key role in ensuring the climate change commitments set out in our devolution deal for the North East are delivered, and new proposals are brought forward that showcase our innovation potential and support the creation of green jobs in the city, alongside a just transition for our residents, communities and businesses.
About you You will have deep technical knowledge of a range of subjects relating to climate mitigation and adaptation, and an understanding of how these can be applied to our varied services. You will be comfortable working with commercial providers to test solutions and shape delivery, often in innovative and novel applications of technology. You will have significant experience of major project direction, and securing and successfully delivering external funding.
You will use your professional credibility and personal influence to further develop and consolidate relationships within the council, the city, and the North East to drive tangible change in delivery. You will be comfortable working in a political environment both locally and regionally, and you will have a strong understanding of and be capable of influencing national policy around the climate agenda.
You will be a compelling communicator, able to translate technical concepts and activity into relatable language for a wide range of audiences, including residents and communities, and to influence change at all levels.
