About the role

Balfour Beatty is currently recruiting a Substation Protection & Control Design Engineer to work within Substation Design. This role can be based within any of our Power, Transmission and Distribution offices in: Derby, Glasgow Leeds, Newcastle or Kintore. We are open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.

The main function of the role is to engineer the control, protection and any other secondary designs for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400kV.

The employee would need to become capable of delivering the role specifics related to the Substation Protection & Control Design Engineering function.

What you'll be doing

General Responsibilities:

• Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with standard Company Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Procedures and Business Process Manual
• Take personal ownership of technical development of your skills and duties to ensure continuous
• improvement.
• Undertake works to a degree of technical standard, and assurance, consistently and with thorough self checking of works, within the delivery timescales for activities.

Planning Responsibilities:

• Upon contract award, liaise and co-ordinate contract requirements with Project Manager, customer, external suppliers and other Balfour Beatty Departments at earliest opportunity
• Effectively control, update and report on workload progress, giving estimates to complete and highlight potential delivery problems and solutions to Principal Protection and Control Engineer (PPCE) / Senior Protection and Control Engineer (SPCE) as appropriate

Design Responsibilities:

• Design work to be undertaken with due regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures and production of Designer Risk Assessments, as necessary, to fulfil the Companys obligations in compliance with current CDM regulations.
• Liaise with other Designers and Technicians on calculations and drawings requirements. (including
• Suppliers)
• Initiate the preparation of all required drawings / models and perform design check of drawing contents to be submitted for customer / sub-contractor interface
• In conjunction with other Balfour Beatty teams, prepare installation and commissioning packages, in a timely manner as dictated by the Site Installation & Commissioning Schedule
• Prepare special Test Specifications and Procedures for the FAT process (Factory Acceptance Testing)

Who we're looking for

Education:

• BEng/BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering or higher. BENg/BSc (Hons) preferable.

Experience

• Liaising with customers and suppliers
• Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and associated power system components
• Calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs
• Microsoft Office Packages
• Experience of Protection and Control Aspects.
• Experience with General Arrangements, Circuit Diagrams and Wiring Diagrams
• Experience with AC / DC supplies on substation environments, such as Battery systems, diesel generators, DNO supplies, ET, other.
• Experience with P&C aspects of Smart Monitoring equipment installed in HV Primary plant is an advantage. Partial Discharge monitoring, Oil & Gas monitoring.
• Knowledge of AutoCAD drawing package would be an advantage
