Job description

The University of Sussex is seeking to make the appointment to the post of Senior Decarbonisation Manager to play the crucial role in the delivery of the University’s Sustainability Strategy.

The University of Sussex is a leading higher education and research institution. The first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in 1961, Sussex is a successful, growing University which is in the top 10 in the UK and top 50 in the world in both the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and the QS Sustainability Rankings.  The University has a beautiful and diverse estate located in Falmer, to the east of Brighton and Hove.  It is situated in the South Downs National Park and has amongst its buildings a core heritage estate designed by Sir Basil Spence.

This is an exciting opportunity in a newly created role which will enable you to lead on our institutional efforts to reduce the University’s direct carbon emissions associated with energy and infrastructure. Working directly to the Head of Sustainability you will provide leadership in developing our target of being net zero by 2035 into workable plans for the next eleven years.  This is a dynamic role where you will be required to provide general advice and thought leadership on direct decarbonisation in addition to the specific key priority tasks.

As an institutional expert, thought leader and advisor on decarbonisation, you will develop detailed carbon management plans and net zero road maps and ensure their realisation as an intelligent client – this is likely to include energy efficiency improvements, heat and power decarbonisation, renewable energy and sustainable transport infrastructure.

The successful candidate will have proven experience of shaping, planning and delivering strategies for decarbonisation across an estate portfolio of significant scale.   You will have a track record of leading the delivery of high-impact projects and programmes relating to decarbonisation such as delivering renewable energy infrastructure, sustainable transport infrastructure and decarbonising existing energy generation systems.

This role offers a fantastic opportunity for a sustainability professional to take up a key role across a diverse and complex organisation in a vibrant city.  The candidate brochure can be viewed here.

To learn more please contact our retained search advisors Matt Giles ([email protected]) and Ben Duffill ([email protected]) at MRG.  Applications should consist of a CV and cover letter and can be sent to [email protected].

The closing date for application is Sunday 11th February 2024.

The University is committed to providing an environment which recognises, and values people's differences, capitalises on the strengths that those differences bring to the institution and supports all staff and students in maximising their potential to succeed.
