Teacher of English with a TLR for additional responsibility

Full-time MPS

Commencing September 2024

Harefield School is an 11-18 comprehensive school. In our most recent Ofsted inspection in September 2021, the inspector reported that: “The school was graded Good in all areas, the inspector reported that: “Pupils have a strong sense of right and wrong. They learn about equality and diversity through the programme for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE). Pupils have high aspirations for their futures. They behave well in lessons, with minimal disruption to learning”.

As a smaller than average school, we can get to know each student well and respond effectively to their learning needs as a result. Similarly, our staff work together in a collaborative, supportive and cohesive way with common purpose.

We offer a comprehensive programme of continued professional development for teachers at all levels across the school, through numerous collaborative networks within the borough and externally.

Harefield School is seeking to recruit a dynamic and innovative teacher of English with a TLR . The candidate will be required to help create an exceptional place of learning and ensure that teaching, learning and progress are consistently at a high standard, as well as the ability to robustly monitor data and have high expectations of all students.

The successful candidate will:

 be a high calibre, experienced practitioner who can teach all students across Key Stages 3, and 4;

 be able to show a strong record of raising student attainment through their teaching of examination groups;

 be an individual who shares our common sense of purpose and high expectations of what students can achieve;

 hold QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree. 

General requirements

• A well-qualified candidate with excellent subject knowledge and a passion for the subject.

• Excellent organisational and time management skills and the ability to produce creative solutions to challenges.

• A good communicator who can enthuse and inspire both pupils and colleagues and will have exciting ideas about the teaching of English, and will initiate ways to develop the teaching and learning across the KS3 and KS4 curriculum.

Key responsibilities

• To maintain classroom discipline and help maintain school discipline in accordance with school policy standards and procedures; to arrive promptly at lessons and dismiss students at the correct times; to keep checks on students’ attendance at lessons and follow up absences as appropriate; to liaise with Heads of Department on matters of concern relating to individual students.

• To follow departmental syllabuses and schemes of work for each teaching group; to prepare properly lesson materials and to mark students’ work consistent with departmental and school assessment policy; to set and mark homework in accordance with departmental and school policy; to have the highest reasonable expectation of individual student performance; to play a part in organisation and administration.

• To keep appropriate records of individual students’ work and achievements, consistent with departmental and school policy; to make a proper contribution to the writing of school reports; to complete such National Curriculum assessments as are required.

• To play a part in the development of departmental, curriculum development group and year team meetings as appropriate; to seek to identify personal staff development and INSET needs and ensure that these are discussed with Head of Department.

• To ensure that practice is, in all respects consistent with the requirements of Harefield School Health and Safety at Work policy as well as with any subject specific health and safety guidelines.

• To be involved in some aspect of extra curricular activity.

• The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

• In addition to carry out other duties as reasonably required by the Head Teacher.
