Newham Children’s Social Care is now open to applications for the Assessed and Supported Year of Employment (ASYE) Programme.
We are currently recruiting for newly qualified social workers who will be able to commence work in July or October. This means you must have graduated and be registered with Social Work England before the first week of July and October to apply to start in each cohort.
Newham offers excellent opportunities for Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSWs) to become excellent practitioners. We are one of the UK’s most diverse local authority with vibrant communities of many nationalities, ethnicities, languages, faiths, and customs. We are looking for dedicated and ambitious social workers who are keen to make a difference.
We view the ASYE as an investment in the service we provide to our community. The Newham ASYE programme is a comprehensive introduction to the profession for NQSWs, with monthly dedicated training, on-the-job targeted learning, and reflective space. The first half of the programme covers the Journey of the Child, with NQSWs given opportunities to gain insight into the impact of involvement on the lived experience of children and families. The second half includes a 5-day Systemic Practice course to introduce NQSWs to a practice framework that is restorative and relational in approach and uses systemic ideas.
Participants will be supported by their line-manager assessors, Practice Development Social Workers and the wider Social Care Academy. Our emphasis is on learning and reflection so that NQSWs finish their ASYE experienced and confident in their role and their identity as a social worker.
In Newham, the ASYE is the first step along a career progression pathway with routes to management, specialisms, family therapy, practice development and other roles. This includes a post-ASYE consolidation year, the Practice Educator Award and further systemic practice training. We also have a significant training and development offer that is aligned with our ambitious and generous career development pathway.

The Recruitment Process
Shortlisting will be based on candidates having met the basic criteria (evidenced by their CV) alongside candidates’ written Application Form which will be marked in line with pre-set criteria. We are hoping to have completed shortlisting before Monday 18/03/2024.
Those shortlisted will then take part in a remote written test and a group activity. These will be held virtually over MS Teams. Candidates will need a suitable device, access to MS Teams and a sufficient internet connection. Due to the high volume of applications rebooking due to poor connection will be solely at our discretion. These stages will be completed between 25/03/2024 and 02/01/2024.
Finally, those who pass the written test and group activity will undergo a panel interview with senior management from across the service. These interviews will take place between 16/04/2024 and 19/04/2024.
All stages of the process will be remote to encourage participation, and due to the expected high volume of applicants we will regrettably not be able to reschedule or accommodate times other than already planned.
Offers will be made following completion of this process.
