Position Information

Located on Ngunnawal land in the rapidly growing regional centre of Queanbeyan, Queanbeyan High School is a comprehensive high school educating 492 students from diverse backgrounds. 22% of students have English as an additional language or dialect and 14% of students identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Our school has 8 Support classes meeting a wide range of needs.  The school team are committed to working to consistently improve the cultural safety of the school, for all students, families, and staff.

Proud of our ongoing history of graduates gaining places at universities, apprenticeships, traineeships and employment our school consistently exceeds regional, state and national levels for further education, training and employment. A focus on working as a community to build school readiness, work readiness and job readiness begins with a focus on attendance and personalised post school pathway planning. Our Careers Teacher, Inclusion Job Coach, and our Aboriginal Education Officer work together to connect students with opportunities to consider a range of pathways suited to their interests and abilities. Respectful Responsible Learners underpins our focus on interactions with learning and each other to develop the skills for school readiness, work readiness and future readiness. 

A collaborative community of practice is growing within and between our partner primary and secondary schools in the Queanbeyan Network of Schools which supports quality improvement across all schools. A range of programs run to support pre-service teachers, beginning teachers and leaders.

Our school funds a range of additional teaching and non-teaching positions and programs to support our learners. We have a range of wellbeing programs servicing our school and industry organisations supporting our students to transition to quality post school destinations.

Our Learning and Support team support students requiring consolidation with foundation skills in literacy and numeracy with small group interventions. Students may access personalised support for assessment and research skills, and the ELEVATE program provides personalise intensive support with senior students’ academic skills in readiness for successful HSC outcomes and university.

A team of school counsellors, a WHIN Nurse, Student Support Officer, Aboriginal Education Officer provide a range of wellbeing programs that focus on whole of school or year group need, through to individualised support. We partner with the Not-for-Profit group Together for Youth to deliver a suite of wellbeing programs across all years.

Specific Selection Criteria

  1. Approval to teach Careers or currently undertaking or currently enrolled in the Careers Advisor qualifications approved by the NSW Department of Education.
  2. A strong understanding of NESA requirements and pathways to post school destinations and programs that support transitions
  3. Understanding of, or experience delivering Vocational Education Training in a secondary setting.
  4. Experience or skills that support effective management of workflow to meet deadlines and  compliance with variation of routine procedures and work place assessments

Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

Special Notes

If applicable engagement will be temporary until successful completion of the Careers Adviser qualifications as recognised by the NSW Department of Education, which must be completed within 12 months.
