Role: Senior Clinical Coding Officer Lead

Contract Length: Anticipated 6 months

Hours: 37.5

Location: Darlington Memorial Hall DL3 6HX or Remote

Pay Rate: £14.32 PAYE per hour
DBS Required for this role TBC
OH Assessment required
Must be ACC Qualified Clinical Coder with last 3 years refresher
Summary:

The Clinical Coding Team is responsible for coding in excess of 150,000 finished consultant episodes per annum in order to meet nationally agreed time scales, ensuring accuracy and completeness of coding and correct HRG assignment in order to guarantee the Trust receives correct financial reimbursement

The post-holder will be responsible for coding a more complex case-load within the coding department by analysing, abstracting highly complex and highly confidential information from the patients electronic clinical record, translating and aggregating into ICD (Diagnosis) and OPCS (Procedural) codes ensuring accuracy conforms to National standards in a timely manner to all Inpatient/Daycase activity via the Trusts Pas and Coding system to meet commissioner deadlines.

The post involves liaising with clinicians and clinical teams on a regular basis to verify data recorded in the patient’s electronic record and on the Trusts PAS system. Communicating complex coding rules to clinical coding staff and all healthcare professionals.

The post-holder will contribute positively towards the development of novice clinical coders by acting as a mentor and assisting training of less experienced.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Abstract and analyse highly complex clinical information from the electronic patient record and other source documents, within set timescales, applying national and international clinical coding conventions.
Use judgment to translate complex clinical details into sets of codes where the diagnoses, procedures or both are not readily codeable.
Prioritise the order to which complex diagnostic and procedural coding appear to ensure maximum financial income to the Trust.
Ensure all ICD/OPCS books are kept up to date with the latest guidance.
To be responsible for uncoded finished consultant episodes over a wide range of specialities.
Ensure deadlines are met to avoid financial penalties in line with flex an freeze dates, including forward planning of workloads for self and less experienced team members.
Take responsibility for coordinating workload to ensure deadlines are met in the absence of the Clinical Coding Manager.
Comply with national agreed clinical coding policies.
Assist in the development and Implementation of agreed local variations to coding rules via departmental policy and procedure manuals which impact on the clinical coding of specialities or clinicians.
Ensure compliance with all relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs) applicable to the clinical coding service.
Assist in the mentoring and development of novice/trainee clinical coders as required by the Clinical Coding Manager/ Trainer or the Clinical Coding Auditor.
Provides training, support and guidance to less experienced clinical coders.
Assist colleagues studying for the National Clinical Coding qualification.
Process patient’s electronic casenotes, test results and coded data, ensuring that all outstanding coding and errors are dealt with within agreed deadlines to support timeliness of clinical information.
Use encoding software package to generate accurate and meaningful clinical coded data.
Provides clinical codes using ICD-10, OPCS and HRG`s for clinical research and case mix.
Ability to work in a stressful environment, dealing with constant interruptions and noise levels.
Will be required on occasions to work outside hours to achieve clinical coding deadlines and business critical tasks

Qualifications & Training

National Clinical Coding Qualification ( NCCQ)
Clinical Coding Standards Couse Certification or Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course training Certification
A Level or equivalent qualifications
Certificate in Anatomy & Physiology

Experience

Extensive practical Coding experience
Extensive experience in coding across multiple specialities within an acute hospital setting.
Experience of using either Paper and Electronic records to extract clinical information
Experience in using e-Record/ PAS System – Cerner Millennium/ Powerchart, other IT Systems
Experience in use of encoding software products - Medicode
Experience of the medical records process
Experience of working in the NHS
