Job description
Validate and release results from all areas of the laboratory. To instigate any necessary actions consequent on their release, e.g. discussion with clinical staff, advice, suggestions and the instigation of further investigations. Provide (with others) a highly specialised advisory service in all aspects of Clinical Biochemistry to the trust, the PCT and other external bodies as appropriate Provide all necessary input to the work of the department to ensure the provision of a rapid, reliable and efficient service Ensure the validity of results produced within areas of activity by monitoring performance of methodologies and available quality control data, and ensuring provision of protocols for the correction of problems Participate in the investigation of any erroneous or unusual patient test results Help to ensure the timely reporting of patient results in order that patient care is not compromised Assist in determining the best combination of tests included in request profiles, the method of requesting, sample handling and result reporting To assist in the process for setting the establishment, and participate in the auditing, of all working procedures and protocols within your area of responsibility Contribute to the planning and implementation of changes and modifications to analytical methods, policies and protocols in the laboratory Participate in the investigation and correction of problems revealed by quality procedures Investigate and evaluate new methodologies, analytical techniques, and new equipment as required to meet the objectives of the department To perform more complex tests, plan and initiate a programme of test development. Seek areas of research and development clearly identifying clinical utility and possible sources of funding. Undertake clinical audit as required. Provide teaching sessions, as required, for fellow members of staff and others. Attend ward rounds and clinics as appropriate for training To maintain a high personal level of current knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry. To maintain a high personal level of current knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry To maintain scientific and technical knowledge to make valid judgements on results and in liaison with Chemical Pathologists, evaluate implications for patient diagnosis and therapy. Acquire specialist knowledge through a process of appropriate higher levels of academic study and continuing vocational training. Attend regional training days and appropriate scientific meetings.
