Job description
What you will do in your working day
- A typical day on site starts with a shift handover and briefing to bring you up to speed with your priorities for the day
- You will buddy up with a team member and assist in the installation operation, planned preventative maintenance and repair of machinery such as pumps, turbines or compressors as well as start the journey of learning how we make sugar from sugar beet.
- With the support of your manager and team members, you start to learn technical knowledge as to how pieces of the plant work and start to carry out routine inspections and maintenance tasks
The training you will be getting
- You will gain a Level 3 City & Guilds qualification in Process Technology from studying with our training provider, Cogent Skills, as well as various British Sugar internal and industry related courses to help you in your development
- We will develop your communications skills, problem solving and team working skills throughout the scheme using coaches and mentoring sessions, as well as through an Outward-Bound programme in the Lake District
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
- On successful completion of the scheme, you can become a shift technician where you will work both individually and as part of a manufacturing team
- The factory operations are large-scale fast-moving process plants where every day is different, they operate 24/7 and are controlled by the very latest sophisticated control systems
- You will become an integral part of a team monitoring and operating the plant, processing the sugar beet crop to produce products such as sugar, animal feeds, bio-gas, and bioethanol
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship and upon receipt of the apprenticeship certificate, individuals are eligible to apply for RSciTech through a shortened application route. Individuals also need to be a member of a professional body that is licensed by the Science Council to be awarded this status. Further information is on the Science Council’s website.
This standard meets the professional standards of the Engineering Council for registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech). Registration is subject to candidates successfully completing the appropriate learning, developing the appropriate competence, and undergoing professional review.
