Position Summary

We are seeking exceptional Process R&D Scientists with a background in chemistry, a proven track record of theoretical and practical excellence and experience transferring process from lab to (pilot) plant scale. Within the Technology function, we design and synthesise novel compounds across a variety of chemistry types, developing robust processes which can be translated to commercial manufacture for applications within and outside the lubricant additive industry.

What the role entails:

• Contribute to the high safety standard of the group within and beyond laboratory work
• Predominantly lab-based (at least 60% of time), developing commercially viable synthetic processes for translation to commercial manufacture
• Working individually, or leading and stewarding workstreams involving other colleagues
• Requirement to take ownership for other (sometimes non-lab based activities) to support the team’s operation (e.g. related to safety, risk assessment and/or quality)
• Effective collation of data, interpreting and communicating results to agree next project steps in collaboration with others
• A sense of urgency and desire to develop work programmes to meet research targets and timelines

What skills will you gain from this role?

 

You will have the opportunity to drive the development of industrially relevant, next generation materials across a range of scales (g – kg) in well-equipped laboratories. As part of this, there is scope to propose and develop internal laboratory capabilities to meet these aims. You will enhance your understanding of factors which enable commercialisation of novel chemical solutions whilst working across multiple functions to assess regulatory, legal (intellectual property) and commercial viability of new materials. You will also have the opportunity to coach and support the development of junior colleagues.

A successful candidate is likely to have:

• Excellent technical and practical chemistry background in chemistry
• Track record within an industrial process R&D setting of translating early-stage synthetic routes into robust chemical processes which can be translated to commercial manufacture
• Operational experience with jacketed reactors and accompanying software
• Hands-on experience in use and troubleshooting of a range of chemical analysis techniques such as LC-MS, GC-FID, GC-MS, NMR spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy (some experience of Process Analytical Technologies advantageous, not critical)
• Ability to effectively collaborate with other business interfaces (e.g. manufacturing, material performance testing, regulatory compliance etc.).
