Overview

The Workshop Supervisor is responsible for supervising the day-to-day frontline operations and leading a team of four mechanics and an apprentice within our in-house state of the art workshop. The workshop maintains and services a large-scale fleet of refuse collection Vehicles (RCVs), cage tippers, mowers, tractors, roll on roll offs, vans and trailers. The fleet is required to deliver high profile, public facing statutory and non-statutory waste collection, street cleansing and grounds maintenance services across the north of Buckinghamshire and this role is responsible for ensuring vehicles are always available and compliant.

This role will directly line manage and motivate a team of specialist mechanics in a high risk environment. This includes the provision of training, and development, engaging team meetings and driving forward change.. It will also involve ensuring the workload is delivered and distributed amongst the team, allowing for unplanned and reactive works as well as scheduled services and repairs to be delivered.

The role is also responsible for public, internal and taxi MOTs, in addition to ensuring regulations are fully complied with, including health and safety.

The role is also responsible for the delivery of public and taxi MOTs, in addition to internal fleet repair and maintenance for other service areas across the Council. Across all functions the role must ensure that regulations are complied with at all times.

About the role

This role is a fundamental part of ensuring all our vehicles are ready for frontline service delivery and maintained to the highest standard, so service disruption is kept to a minimum.

The Workshop Supervisor will influence behaviour change and motivate the team to deliver high standards. The role will interact with other senior members of the council and will deputise for the Workshop Manager when required.

The role will be based at our new Workshop at the Pembroke Road Depot in Aylesbury.

The Workshop Supervisor will be joining a team of 4 mechanics and an apprentice. As well as making a real difference to the North Waste and Street Scene Neighbourhood Service team.

Key Accountabilities

- Ensure the team effectively responds to daily defects and breakdowns of vehicles to ensure they remain roadworthy.
- To be on hands and take control of specialised technical issues that arise in our fleet and make plans to rectify these, which will include liaising with the vehicle manufacturers and service departments.
- To lead the team of mechanics to include organising shift plans, holiday cover plans & work distribution amongst the team.
- Manage the team’s training and development needs, ensuring they remain up to date with relevant technology and comply with industry and corporate standards.
- To carry out weekly team meetings and one to one with the team. Manage performance through the Council’s performance management framework.
- Act as a positive role model and lead by example, embedding a positive culture that aligns with the Council’s PACT values.
- Be part of a rota-based shift pattern and willing to be flexible.
- Oversee the running of 2x MOT lanes and daily private and taxi MOTs, ensuring the site traffic management plan is adhered to by all employees and visitors.
- Deputies for the Workshop Manager and be involved in corporate activities and initiatives, keeping the workshop on the radar internally. This will include making high level decisions regarding budgets and considering options to get vehicles back on the road, taking into account the financial implications and the operational impact.

About you

You will be a highly skilled qualified mechanic with experience in supervising a team and taking a lead in a busy, fast paced workshop where the workload varies from day to day. The Worksop Supervisor will have the ability to make quick decisions to maintain service delivery is essential to the role.

We are looking for someone with high standards to help us move further forward on our journey to be self-sufficient regarding in house service & repairs with experience in working with a variety of vehicles from heavy HGVs to light vehicles & machinery.
You will be a great leader to ensure the best performance is achieved by the team.

Other information

This is a permanent role. The hours are 37 hours. Shift times currently to be confirmed. Shift cover will be required. The current shifts are 06:00 – 14:00 & 09:00 – 17:00 Mon – Friday with catch up Saturday cover requirements as needed.
