Job description


Following a review of our UGI straight to Test program we have created a new Band 7 CNS post. We are offering the opportunity for a dynamic senior nurse to join our existing team to be part of the continued development of our service.

The post holder will contribute to the on-going role in the development of the service for patients with suspected or confirmed UGI cancers. This will include developing protocols; setting up; and running a variety of nurse led clinics (STT/non-STT/New/Follow-up/Cancer/non-Cancer/Face to Face/Virtual/Telephone/or other) for assessment and follow up care. The post holder will be the key professional involved in leading the triage assessment service which includes vetting referrals, telephone assessments and requesting appropriate investigations on this assessment.

Candidates will need to have had experience working at band 6 level with a patient group relevant to this role.

Clinical Practice
1. To provide expert nursing advice to patients with suspected UGI malignancies over the phone or face to face where necessary.
2. To demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge through expert nursing practice.
3. To liaise with all relevant members of the multidisciplinary team in the care and support of individual patients including GPs.
4. To maintain a high profile in the clinical area, acting as a role model for other health care professionals.
5. To facilitate individualised patient care based upon the principles of evidence based practice.
6. To act as a liaison nurse between investigations until patient is diagnosed with cancer or referred back to GP.
7. To hold a variety of nurse led clinics, including the development of written protocols based on national standards, triaging or following up suspected UGI cancer patients, arranging investigations, reviewing results, diagnosing and referring back to a medical team as appropriate.
8. To refer patients diagnosed with UGI cancer for on-going support.
9. To work in close collaboration with all members of the MDT.
10. To provide professional clinical leadership and expertise to other nursing staff.
11. To work as part of the UGI Cancer Clinical Nurse specialist wider team, rotating responsibilities to ensure cover of the entire patient pathway including post diagnostic care and support.
