Job description
What you will do in your working day
As a pre-press apprentice, your daily responsibilities may vary depending on the specific requirements of the company you work for and your level of experience.
However, typical responsibilities for a pre-press apprentice may include:
- Preparing Files: Assisting in the preparation of digital files for printing, including checking and adjusting colours, resolution, and file formats to ensure they meet printing specifications.
- Proofreading: Reviewing proofs for accuracy, ensuring that text, images, and layout elements are correct and ready for production.
- File Management: Organising and maintaining digital files and archives, ensuring they are easily accessible and properly labelled for future reference.
- Software Operation: Learning to use pre-press software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and specialised pre-press applications for tasks such as colour management, trapping, and imposition. Also overseeing the automated software that handles the majority of basic pre-press operations.
- Quality Control: Assisting in quality control processes to ensure that printed materials meet established quality standards, including checking for errors, defects, and colour consistency.
- Communications: Communicating with other team members, such as graphic designers, printers, and clients, to clarify job requirements, address any issues, and ensure projects are completed accurately and on time. You may also be required to speak to customers to explain and resolve any artwork issues.
- Equipment Maintenance: Assisting with the maintenance and calibration of pre-press equipment, such as Mac’s, PCs and any other equipment, to ensure they are functioning properly and producing high-quality output.
- Learning and Development: Actively participating in training sessions and workshops to expand your knowledge and skills in pre-press techniques, software applications, and printing technologies.
- Problem Solving: Troubleshooting issues that arise during the pre-press process, such as file compatibility problems, colour mismatches, or technical glitches, and finding solutions to resolve them effectively.
- Documentation: Keeping detailed records of pre-press activities, including job specifications, production schedules, and any revisions or changes made during the pre-press process. Ensuring the MIS system is kept up to date with all job details and times.
- Adhering to Procedures: Following established procedures and guidelines for pre-press operations, including company policies, industry standards, and best practices for file preparation and printing.
- Assisting Senior Staff: Providing support to more experienced members of the team as needed, and learning from their expertise to further develop your skills in the field.
The training you will be getting
Advanced Apprenticeship Standard for Print Technicians (Level 3)
- A full plan will be created at the start of the Apprenticeship to provide information as to what you will be studying and when.
- Learn2print will deliver the theoretical knowledge for your Print Apprenticeship.
- You will attend a class each month for one full day at a local venue (this information will be provided on interview).
- This teaching and training will cover everything from health and safety and general industrial practices to specific industry practices.
- This will lead you to preparation for your end point assessment, consisting of an online exam, professional discussion and observation in the workplace.
- You will be allocated a designated tutor and workplace mentor who will support and guide you through the apprenticeship.
