Duties:
- Holding the full delegated authority of the Chief Nurse across the entire range of the Corporate Nursing and Chief Nurse’s portfolio
- Making strategic decisions which impact on the quality and safety of services, including but not isolated to safe staffing levels, infection control outbreaks and service closures
- Provide day to day operational advice and leadership to Divisional Directors of Nursing, Associate Directors of Nursing, Matrons, Nurse Specialists, and Ward Managers and provide expert nursing advice to Divisional Associate Directors of Operations
- Leading nursing and Allied Health Professional Quality Improvements (QI) programs to support improvements in safety and patient experience
- Managing the Corporate Nursing Team, to include lead for development of nurse indicators and audits
- Deputising at local, regional, and national meetings as requested ensuring the organisation and profession is represented operationally and strategically
- Deputising at Executive Committee and Board meetings as required, developing, and presenting papers, ensuring that nursing issues and local and national issues that impact on the organisation are raised and addressed
- Making decisions in such meetings on behalf of the Chief Nurse
- Providing expert professional and operational advice and guidance at a senior level
- Lead the development and monitoring of standards for delivery of excellent care and professionalism, holding responsibility for the development and management of nursing indicators and quality audits
- Lead and hold responsibility for key areas; digital development, safeguarding children and adult, non-medical prescribing, emergency planning, professional development and nursing / AHP education strategy, and nursing / AHP regulation and revalidation
- Lead for non-medical prescribing ( Nursing and Midwifery )
- Lead for delivery of the vaccination program
- Lead nurse to advise and support the Governance Support Unit function
- Lead Nurse for CQC response and planning
- Develop and lead systems for managing and regulation and validation of Nurses and Midwives
- Lead professional development of nursing workforce and nurse education strategy
Requirements for theDeputy Chief Nurse role:
- Educated to Master’s level or an equivalent level of work experience
- Management qualification
- Clinical qualification with current registration with relevant professional body (NMC)
- Able to apply interpretative and innovative thinking in relation to the scope of the position and demonstrate a proactive and enthusiastic approach to embedding this in practice
- Able to adapt and deal with situations and manage expectations during periods of change, being able to take account of the broader perspective, including equality and diversity issues, and how it affects the wider priorities
- Evidence of recent continuing professional development
- Experience working at a senior level within the NHS for a number of years
- Recent leadership experience within an acute setting
- Significant of operational management on an acute hospital environment
- Experience of educational commissioning
- Significant expert/specialist knowledge in clinical and quality improvement, system-wide transformational change, and strategic development preferably in the NHS or similar complex organisation
- Record of successful quality improvement / management of change in patient-centred care and innovation in a complex environment
- Ability to travel as desired
