Job description
Take a specialised and accurate ear impression by syringing dedicated earmould material into the ear canal in accordance with procedural guidelines. This will require effective communication with and the co-operation of the patient. Select and fit digital signal processing hearing aids using computer based programming software in accordance with protocols. Verify hearing aid fitting using highly skilled coupler and real ear measurements (REM). The REM involves the insertion of probe tubes deep into the patient's ear canal to within 3mm of the eardrum. This will require effective communication with and the co-operation of the patient. Instruct and guide the patient in operation and maintenance of the hearing aid, adapting the instructions and approach to accommodate the patients communication and physical difficulties. Provide patient specific counselling with regards to management of their hearing loss. To provide non-complex tinnitus support to patients as part of their audiological management Record accurately, and in a timely manner, all patient records including test results and journal entries electronically onto a computerised patient management system and database. Perform outcome measures by using standardised quantifiable questionnaires. Administer the questionnaires to the patient pre and post hearing aid fitting in accordance with protocols. Evaluate the fit of earmoulds and modify as necessary using a hand precision lathe and/or drill. Decontaminate earmoulds in accordance with departmental infection control policies. Perform hearing aid repair and maintenance when required. Carry out daily calibration of all audiological equipment and record log of calibration. Assist with timely and efficient operation of stock control, IT and equipment management or audit. Participate in clinical audit and any on-going research and development of new techniques within the service. Participate in the departmental process for appraisal/personal development and keep your Personal Development folder up to date in line with relevant Trust Policies. Assist the Head of Hearing and Balance Services in the efficient management of the service and promote and implement all the Trust policies and procedures. The post holder will prioritise their workload and use innovative processes to ensure the smooth operation of the service. It is essential that the post holder will be willing to work as a member of the team, in all sections of the service as may be required across Berkshire, adapt to changes, and aim to improve service to patients and the quality of Audiology. The must haves for this role: BSc in Healthcare Science - Audiology / HCCC in Audiology Prior to 2006, basic qualification in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurements (or equivalent) and successfully completed both parts of BAAT I and II and/or HTEC in MPPM Possess RCCP registration and hold an up to date CPD portfolio Demonstrated during or post-qualification experience working autonomously in both adult and some paediatric testing in both diagnostic and rehabilitative areas. Have knowledge of all standard and advanced test procedures. Knowledge and understanding of professional policies and procedures. Have completed appropriate record of clinical competence. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills particularly with the hard of hearing and deaf. Possess good computer and database skills Possess fine manual dexterity.
