Job description

We are looking for one Band 5 staff nurse, to join our team at Darland House. The successful applicant will be required to undertake all aspects of nursing care including activities with residents. Ideally the candidate would predominantly work night shifts across the week but will be expected to do a few day shifts within the month to ensure you remain up to date. In return we offer the right person the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in Dementia care and become a valued member of our developing service.

To work as a qualified member of the nursing home team providing 24 hour care. Providing the planned care for the residents, leading the team when required and deputising for the senior nurse in the event of their absence.

The small print
• Informal visits can be arranged on request.

• MCH encourages all staff to be double COVID vaccinated to protect themselves, their colleagues, their family and their patients.

At this time, MCH cannot fund or support any further nurses who require the OSCE training. Please do not apply if you require this training.

1. Communication and relationship skills
• Able to effectively communicate with staff, residents and their families, managers and staff from other services and agencies, members of the public, private and voluntary sector.
• Able to provide and receive sensitive and complex information concerning residents and their needs.
• Able to use communication and listening skills including persuasive and reassurance to overcome barriers to understanding.
• Able to motivate, negotiate, reassure and empathise with individuals whilst supporting them with their personal and emotional needs.

2. Knowledge, training and experience
• Registered mental health nurse or registered general nurse qualification.
• Able to risk assess situations, make decisions and accept personal accountability.
• Ability to effectively work as part of the multi-professional team, illustrating an understanding and appreciation of the roles of others within the team.
• Able to prioritise work and exhibit leadership skills to other staff within Darland House. Commitment to Continuing Professional Education – able to supervise and teach/support others.

3. Analytical and judgement skills
• Able to compare and analyse information from a range of sources.
• Able to assess, plan, implement and review residents care, ensuring an individual and holistic approach

4. Planning and organisational skills
• To direct, support and supervise staff within Darland House and take responsibility for the home in the absence of the head of service, deputy manager or senior staff nurse. To act as a key worker and give direction and support other staff with key work responsibility.
• Able to ensure that resources are managed effectively, highlighting any areas of concern. Ability to organise own time and that of junior staff and learners as appropriate.
• Able to monitor standards of care and provide audit findings when required.
• Ability to undertake personal development reviews of junior staff annually, assessing progress regularly; at least once every six months.
To fully participate in continuing healthcare reviews as appropriate.

5. Physical skills
• Highly developed physical skills required for coordinating practical activities with residents e.g. manoeuvring wheelchairs, using hoists.
• Has the dexterity and accuracy required for practical nursing skills including giving of intravenous injections, insertion of catheters etc.
• Able to show clear understanding of own responsibilities for health & safety including ability to take appropriate action if required.

6. Responsibility for patient / client care
• Ability to set and monitor clinical standards of care for residents, ensuring these are achieved through individual care plans using the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation process.
• Encourage patient independence as appropriate. Residents should have as much control as possible over their own health.
• Actively ensure a clean and safe environment in collaboration with other colleagues within the home

7. Responsibility for policy and service development implementation
• Has a professional responsibility to follow Medway Community Healthcare policies and procedures, alerting the appropriate person to any difficulties in doing so.
• Ability to comment and participate in discussion regarding policies and procedures and any proposed changes.
• Responsibility for the implementation of research based clinical practice, raising the quality standards of clinical care.

8. Responsibilities for financial and physical resources
• Assist the head of service in maintaining budgets within spending limits, making best use of resources available.
• Maintain duty of care in relation to equipment and resources.
• Reporting problems/discrepancies quickly and to the appropriate person.
• Maintain duty of care when handling resident equipment and belongings.

9. Responsibilities for human resources (HR)
• Day to day responsibility for supervision of junior and/or new or less experience employees and agency staff as required.
• Actively involved in clinical supervision.
• Demonstrates good understanding and application of the equality and diversity policy.
• Ensure that all PDRs take place in a timely manner identifying service and personal training needs.

10. Responsibilities for information resources
• Correctly and appropriately records personally generated information
• Maintains clear and accurate recording of information in residents records. Ensure that confidentiality in respect of residents is maintained.
• Awareness and application of MCH information governance policies and procedures.

11. Responsibilities for research and development (R&D)
• Participates in surveys and audits where appropriate, sharing and actively discussing ,findings.
