We are currently seeking a skilled Principal Financial Accountant to join a local authority on a temporary basis to cover a range of financial accounting, reconciliation, and reporting responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Undertake various financial accounting tasks in areas such as Balance Sheet Management, Technical Revenue, Capital, Cash and Bank, VAT, and CIS taxation as assigned by the Head of Financial Reporting and Control.
Conduct in-year reconciliation of corporate and statutory GL control accounts, reviewing submissions from service finance teams and reconciling local systems to SAP.
Contribute to planning the annual closure of accounts, including preparing timetables, guidance documents, and templates.
Complete closing timetable tasks and monitor deliverables by colleagues, promptly addressing any slippage and escalating issues to the Head of Financial Reporting and Controls.
Act as the lead contact for assigned services, supporting accounts closure and audit by collaborating with service finance teams.
Respond satisfactorily to all interim and main audit queries raised by the external auditor, obtaining supporting evidence, justifying entries in SAP, and maintaining an up-to-date audit query log.
Contribute to management comments on external audit recommendations and ensure implementation within agreed timeframes.
Requirements:
CCAB Qualified Accountant
Extensive knowledge of accounting principles, policies, and practices
Extensive knowledge of the council's budget processes and requirements
Knowledge of the council's financial framework, including financial regulations, budget, and closing of accounts guidelines
Familiarity with major factors, influences, and legislation facing local government
Knowledge of tender evaluation and contract negotiation
Understanding of UK and international accounting standards and their application
