Job Title : Keyperson
Responsible to : Manager
Responsible for : No personnel, however you are expected to oversee
Students and Volunteers and give guidance where necessary.
Training and Qualifications:
Recognised Pre-school related or early years educational qualification appropriate for fulfilling the role of Keyperson such as NVQ3 in Early Years childcare and Education or the Level 3 Diploma in Children and Young Persons Workforce to be supported by the following:
Ø First Aid
Ø Food Preparation and Hygiene Training
Ø Manual Handling Training
Ø Safeguarding Level 3
Ø Makaton Levels 1-4
Purpose of the Job:
To Safeguard all children in a fun and happy setting, embracing the outside, with a holistic approach to learning. Inspiring independence, resilience and self confidence in a nurturing environment.
To work as a key person and as part of the Pre-school team under the direction of the Manager, or their Deputy.
To provide safe, high quality educational activities and to give emotional care for the children attending St Michael’s Pre-school.
Duties:
1) To have safeguarding forefront in all parts of your job, considering the children’s safety first and that of families, staff, volunteers and visitors.
2) To act as key person for a small group of children liaising with parents/carers when necessary to ensure that each child's needs are recognised and met.
3) To supervise Pre-school activities and interact with children, offering a suitable level of support and stimulation.
4) To assist with the planning and implementation of the Pre-school activity curriculum, ensuring it conforms to the EYFS.
5) To ensure that the curriculum planning suits all key children responsible to you, and to make adaptations where necessary.
6) Completion of tracking forms relating to the development of your assigned Key Children termly and in preparation for school transition.
7) To undertake routine administrative tasks necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the Pre-school as requested by the Pre-school Manager or Deputy.
8) Pre-session preparation and equipment set up and tidy at end of day.
9) Cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
10) Periodic washing of gowns.
11) To take the initiative to oversee the daily routine of the session is kept to should the Pre-school Manager/Deputy be unavailable.
12) Undertake kitchen duty on a rota basis.
a. Preparation and serving of snacks and drinks,
b. Cleaning equipment and room,
c. Maintaining hygiene practices and the Food safety book,
d. Ensuring Food allergies and dietary needs are met for all children.
13) Supervision of children entering the Pre-school at the start of each session.
14) Stock control of Pre-school consumables, e.g. paper, paint, snacks, drinks etc.
15) Assisting of the SENCO writing EHCP’s when required.
16) To support the Pre-school Manager, or their Deputy, in responding to any abnormal event/incident or emergency that may occur during a session.
17) To advise the Pre-school Manager, or their Deputy, of any concerns relating to children, the parents or the safety of equipment, preserving confidentiality as necessary.
18) To use Makaton during daily sessions, promoting it to the children at all times.
19) To attend and actively contribute to staff meetings.
20) To maintain confidentiality with respect to any information relating to the children, their families or other Pre-school staff.
21) To attend the AGM annually.
22) To abide by and implement the policies and procedures detailed in the St Michael’s Pre-school Policy Document.
Child and Staff Protection
This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Post holders must be prepared to disclose any convictions they may have and any orders, which have been made against them.
As a valued member of the Pre-school staff you will be expected to be aware of the child protection issues surrounding your role. Not only must you always be vigilant towards the safety and wellbeing of the children, but you must also take responsibility for your own actions and those of the team around you. If you see or hear any unacceptable behaviour from other team members you must report it to the Pre-school Leader.
Your own personal safety is very important, and you must ensure that you work with respect for the rights of the children and also keep your own rights in mind. Always ensure other members of staff are aware of where you are going or why you may be doing certain tasks, never place yourself in a compromising position that could jeopardise yourself or the rest of your team.
