Job description

Job description:

This four-year long PhD position is associated with Liv.Inno Center for Doctoral Training in Data Science, and, alongside the work on a research project, includes a program of advanced lectures/workshops in Data Science and a 6-month industry placement. We invite applications from candidates with strong skills in theoretical physics, coding, data science and Machine Learning.

The main research focus will be on lattice field theory/lattice QCD. For example, you may work on the applications of Machine Learning to extraction of transport coefficients from lattice QCD data, which involves a numerically ill-defined numerical analytic continuation procedure, or use ML to accelerate Monte-Carlo simulations of lattice QCD and condensed matter systems.

At the same time, the candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to a multi-disciplinary collaborative research project with the School of Arts, applying ML methods to research questions in urban planning and/or street art (second supervisor is Dr. Carlos Medel-Vera [email protected]).

Both research directions are open-ended and the successful candidate is invited to actively shape the research projects.

An advantage of this PhD studentship is that, depending on the motivation and aspiration, it gives a successful candidate a universal set of skills and knowledge for either the academic career in theoretical physics/computer science or a career in Big Data/Data Science outside of academia.

The expected starting date is October 2024. Please send formal applications via the official University application web-page https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/study/postgraduate-research/how-to-apply/ using the reference number MPPR0003.

Please contact Dr. Pavel Buividovich, [email protected], for informal inquiries and recommendations.
