Treating Tobacco Dependency Support Worker | Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Location
Dorchester, Dorset | United Kingdom
Job description
An exciting opportunity in Dorset to be part of a new Tobacco Dependency Team working across Dorset supporting inpatients who smoke within Dorset County Hospital and Dorset HealthCare Hospital Trusts.
The NHS Long Term Plan gives a commitment that all people admitted to hospital that smoke will be offered NHS-funded tobacco treatment services by 2023/24.
The CARED project, based on the Ottawa/CURE model, is Our Dorset’s systematic implementation at scale, of the treatment of tobacco dependency in secondary care, and the provision of on-going support for people with mental ill health who have been discharged from inpatient care and continue on their tobacco harm reduction journey.
Dorset’s Integrated Care System is committed to implementing the CARED project in all Acute and Mental Health settings from early 2021.
The CARED project will increase the support we offer to people who are admitted to, or attend our Hospitals to help them to stop smoking or to reduce harm from tobacco and be smoke free during an inpatient admission (temporary abstinence).
The CARED project recognises smoking as an addiction (tobacco dependency) and that it is a chronic, relapsing clinical condition that prematurely kills at least half of people who smoke. Smoking is seen as a medical condition that can be treated, rather than as a lifestyle choice.
The post holder will be working with the respiratory team within Dorset County Hospital alongside all ward environments.
The post holder will provide tobacco treatment advice and support to people who want to stop smoking, reduce their harm from tobacco or for temporary abstinence when in hospital. This will be for patients, and staff and carers of people who have been admitted.
The primary focus of the role is to provide a comprehensive tobacco dependence treatment service. The post holder will:
• Promote the general health and wellbeing of people who use the service through offering tobacco harm reduction support.
• Work with people to change their behaviour to improve their health.
• Act as a smoke-free champion promoting the smoke free message through their day to day work.
• Provide advice and support to ward staff, including reinforcing the training provided to inpatient teams by the Treating Tobacco Dependency Programme Manager and Treating Tobacco Specialist Nurse to reduce harm from tobacco and the promotion of smoke free settings.
• Ensure robust discharge planning for the patient’s on-going tobacco dependency treatment for patients wishing to quit or who have an on-going harm reduction programme.
The post-holder will be expected to work flexibly within Dorset County Hospital providing face to face as well as telephone/digital/remote support.
The post holder must have experience of working autonomously .
A job secondment can be considered providing the candidate has permission in writing from their line manager prior to accepting the post.
