Job description

Our client is a leading designer and manufacturer of fiber lasers for use in cutting, welding and marking applications in a wide range of industries. They sell their products globally and has its major business operations, including Research and Development, Manufacturing and Product Marketing located in both Rugby and Southampton, UK, with additional Sales and Customer Support locations in Asia and North America.

They are looking to expand their Development team by recruiting Mechanical Design Engineers with 3D Modelling experience ideally using Solidworks.

Job Purpose:

In this role you will help the Development team to maintain the mechanical design of our current product portfolio of pulsed wave fiber lasers. This will involve running small-scale projects to improve the quality, manufacturability, assembly and serviceability of our products. The projects will require the candidate to regularly work with cross-functional team members from various other business departments. Key Areas of Responsibility:

• Run small-scale projects, involving colleagues from other departments, to introduce product improvements.

• Provide mechanical engineering technical assistance to support the investigation of quality, assembly and supply chain issues. This will often require a hands-on approach on the production line.

• Design and development of mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks 3D modelling software. This will include many aspects of mechanical design, including the integration of optical, electronic/ electrical system requirements.

• Design for ease of manufacture, assembly and service.

• Detailed engineering drawings (BS8888 STD).

• Update Bills of Materials (BOMs) to implement design improvements.

• Liaise with suppliers to support component design, specifications and maintain product compliance.

• Assist the Mechanical Development team with day-to-day tasks to support new product design.

• Work across multiple tasks methodically and efficiently and meet committed timescales.

• Occasional requirement to make simple modifications to parts using hand tools, e.g. drilling holes.

Required Experience:

• Mechanical Engineering Degree.

o Or HNC/HND level with 2+ year work experience.

• Experience using a 3D CAD package (ideally Solidworks)

• Experience of leading small-scale projects .

• Hands on machining and assembly experience.

• ECR/ECO – Engineering change management process.

Qualifications:

• Degree qualified in a mechanical engineering discipline or HNC/HND.

• Be a strong team worker with good interpersonal skills.

• Good communication and organization skills.

• Comfortable working within a multi-disciplinary team environment

• Be happy to work in a dynamic environment and be adaptable to changes in priorities.
