Job description

What you will do in your working day

Activities will include but limited to:

• Working towards providing technically/discipline focused support to the Design Engineer in the production of arrangement and detail drawings, layouts, basic calculations
• Support activities associated with the implementation of internal and external projects from concept through to site implementation and operation
• Attending meetings
• Working with peers in the Early Careers Group, to promote STEM activity, network within the industry

The training you will be getting

As a minimum, by the end of the 5 year training period, the apprentice will have achieved a HND, BEng, and a Level 6 apprenticeship.

• A Bachelors (Honours) degree qualification (at level 6), accredited by the constituent bodies of the Engineering or Science Council. 
• The degree will have a minimum of 60 relevant nuclear based credits (1/6 of total credits).

However, there will be additional, business relevant, short courses that the apprentice will be expected to undertake.
The apprentices will spend 1 day per week at college, during term time.
The college will be Wigan & Leigh College.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

• Apprentices may be able to progress into the position of Designer (EC&I).

The Science Council for Registered Scientist (RSci). Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship and upon receipt of the apprenticeship certificate, individuals are eligible to apply for RSci through a shortened application route. Individuals also need to be a member of a professional body that is licensed by the Science Council to be awarded this status. Further information is on the Science Council’s website.

On completion of the apprenticeship, the nuclear scientist and nuclear engineer will be eligible to apply for professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) through an appropriate Professional Engineering Institution regulated by the Engineering Council.
