Position Summary

This position is responsible for supporting the development and execution of operational communication plans to ensure that VCC Foundation’s goals are achieved.

Reporting to the Director, Advancement and Executive Director, Foundation, the Strategic Communications Specialist works as an integral member of the VCC’s Foundation team to elevate the Foundation’s brand and support its’ institutional goals, with an emphasis on communications and content development.

Duties & Responsibilities

Internal and External Communications
•Plays a key role in sharing the College’s and the Foundation’s brand story with the public, and in promoting effective communication with VCC’s and the VCC Foundation’s stakeholders.
•Supports a wide variety of the College’s Advancement goals, including stakeholder engagement, revenue generation, and reputation management.
•Develops communication plans, including analysis and defined deliverables on a variety of projects.
•Produces content relevant to target audiences, and consistent with organizational and department goals, including feature articles, web content and other digital assets.
•Coordinates with College Advancement team with respect to content planning and development, project scheduling and review processes, and consultations and creative development and coordination.
•Works with Marketing and Communications Officers, content and social media creators, designers, and web developers/strategists on department marketing and communication initiatives.
•Works collaboratively with the College Advancement team and serves as a key support for Foundation executives, and campaign volunteers.
•Manages complex relationships with internal and external stakeholders utilizing a service-oriented approach.
•Translates ideas and strategies into concrete plans and actions to achieve desired outcomes; addresses unexpected and urgent issues as they arise.
•Responds to stakeholders and audiences diplomatically, while retaining capacity for proactive initiatives that serve the Foundation’s mission and vision.

Writing, Composing and Creating

•Researches, writes, and edits a broad range of communications materials including but not limited to news releases, advisories, backgrounders, fact sheets, quotes, and statements; briefing notes and FAQs; speeches for key Foundation staff and volunteers; program scrips for special events; articles; and newsletter content.

Media

•Maintain a positive profile for the Foundation.
•Serves as the first point of contact for media; researches and responds to, or refers media inquires to the appropriate Foundation resource person and arranges interviews.
•Builds and maintains positive working relationships with local, regional, and national media.
•Monitors media coverage and prepares media monitoring for all Foundation and College Advancement initiatives.
Issues Management, and Emergency Communications Support
•Serves as lead in creating and maintaining the Foundation’s crisis communications strategy and activation plan.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
•Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations; or a related discipline.
•Five (5) years recent related experience in communication in a large, complex organization.
•Experience in higher education or non-profit communications, an asset.
•An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills and Abilities:
•Successful record of delivering effective communications, with an awareness and sensitivity to current sociopolitical issues (e.g. decolonization, reconciliation, and EDI ).
•Demonstrated experience creating content in multiple formats including writing in a digital first environment.
•Demonstrated ability to serve in a consultative role and provide recommendations.
•Ability to work in a fast-paced, creative environment with a wide variety of stakeholders.
•Detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy.
•Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communications planning with critical analysis of key message development.
•Proven knowledge of marketing, communications, and public relations principles, strategies, techniques, and concepts that support revenue generation strategies.
•Proven knowledge of the Canadian and Provincial media landscape and philanthropic communications are essential.
•Demonstrated project management experience with ability to balance multiple projects and meet unexpected and tight deadlines.
•Demonstrated knowledge of the use of social media platforms.
•Demonstrated proficiency in collaborative software programs.
•Demonstrated proficiency posting on CMS website platforms.
•Proven experience with government policies and legislation including FIPPA , PIPA , FOIPOP , CASL , and copyright.
•Ability to think critically and creatively, make informed decisions, and present options to support strategic risk taking and innovation.
•Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, exercise tact and diplomacy, and maintain confidentiality.
•Ability to invite diverse perspectives, consider diverse viewpoints, and facilitate discussion of issues leading to stronger decision-making.
•Ability to adapt to changing business needs, conditions, and work responsibilities.
•Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
•Ability to develop partnerships and promote collaboration and cross-organizational activities.
•Exceptional writing skills with extensive experience writing for different mediums and audiences.
•Excellent critical thinking and issues management skills, identify risks and offering solutions.
•Performs other related duties as assigned.

Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE

$77,408 -$103,211– $113,532 annualized (Pay Grid 9). Normal starting salary placement is between $77,408 and $103,211. Compensation beyond the control/mid-point requires approval by the Public Sector Employer’s Council Secretariat ( PSEC ).
