Job description
Computer Science Teacher Trainee
Full Time Permanent (One Year)
Start date September 2024
Apply by end of 2023-2024 academic year
Dulwich College is looking to recruit both career changers and recent graduates to train as Computing teachers.
Dulwich College is expanding its ITT provision in partnership with the University of Roehampton to create a subject specialised teacher training programme. The programme is designed to provide the highest standard of training and mentoring, with leading practitioners, whilst also addressing the acute shortage of Computing teachers. Roehampton University is at the forefront of computing education, with staff contributing to curriculum development, publications and policy at national and international level.
The SCITT approach is different to traditional teacher training in the following ways:
· Trainees on the programme are in school from day one and at the end of the year are awarded both qualified teacher status (QTS) and a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) from Roehampton University.
· Trainees undertake a main school placement at Dulwich College or one of our partner schools (spanning the comprehensive, grammar and independent sectors) and a second, six-week placement at a contrasting school.
· Trainees teach four days per week and spend the fifth at Roehampton University or a hub school for subject and professional studies training, designed and delivered by leading thinkers, including Miles Berry, Professor of Computer Education at Roehampton University. The course is highly subject specialised: trainees receive 14.5 days of computing specific training over the year.
· Successful applicants will receive a £28,000 bursary for the training year (subject to eligibility). There are also more generous scholarships of £30,000 available from the British Computer Society (BCS) - click here for details.
· Trainees can take out a Student Loan if required to cover the tuition fee of £9,250.
· For trainees who left education some time ago, there are subject knowledge enhancement courses of various lengths available, for which trainees receive an additional bursary for completing.
Entry requirements for candidates are UK settled status, plus a UK first- or second-class bachelor’s degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant subject, in addition to a love of their subject and a desire to work with young people.
