Head of Media A Level

The College of Richard Collyer

Location

Horsham, West Sussex | United Kingdom

Job description

The College of Richard Collyer in Horsham, ‘Collyer’s’, is one of the leading sixth form colleges in the country and the no.1 choice for A Levels in West Sussex.

Established almost 500 years ago, the College of Richard Collyer is forward thinking in every way. Our mission is simple: to deliver the best possible education to our 2,300+ students aged 16 to 19. Our achievements speak for themselves, consistently placing us within the top sixth form colleges nationally. In the summer of 2022, our students achieved 71% A*–B at A Level, and with national averages returning to pre-pandemic levels in 2023, our students achieved an outstanding 61% A*–B. Results across our other qualification types are equally as strong. Approximately 70% of our offer is A Levels, with 25% comprising Level 3 vocational and technical qualifications and 5% comprising our Transition courses for students to bolster their Level 2 qualifications before progressing to Level 3. Alongside our academic, vocational and technical courses, we have a thriving enrichment programme, with over 130 activities available to all students, from sports to arts and crafts and music.

A great college deserves a great location: we’re close to the centre of the historic market town of Horsham and under an hour from London by train. We’re a supportive community rather than just a place to work, and we are deeply committed to the professional development of our staff.

We are looking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic practitioner with an outstanding track record of improving student outcomes to lead Media Studies A Level, a thriving subject area within the Faculty of Business.

Qualifications: Good degree together with a recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DET).

Experience: Current or recent experience of teaching Media Studies A Level. Curriculum leadership experience would be desirable, as well as teaching experience of Creative Digital Media BTEC.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of Media A Level, including a confident command of the theories underpinning Media Studies: for instance, post-modernity, post-colonialism, gender theory and narrative theories. An understanding of and enthusiasm for creative production processes and experience of Adobe Creative Cloud software, including Photoshop, InDesign and Premier Pro, would also be preferred.

Personal Qualities: A reflective practitioner with excellent teamwork, organisation and communication skills.

Motivation and Expectations: A commitment to high standards and a drive to motivate, inspire and support Level 3 students. An enthusiasm for teaching and learning.

As Head of Media A Level, you will work closely with the Heads of Film Studies and BTEC Creative Media and be supported by a media technician and a specialised classroom, edit suite and studio.

All teaching staff are also personal tutors. Tutors monitor progress and offer support and guidance to some 25 students. The ability to contribute to the enrichment programme would also be welcome.

Salary Range: On the SFCA salary scale £30,500 (Point 1) to £47,133 (Point 9) + Responsibility Allowance as Head of Subject from £1,050 rising to £4,280, depending on experience.
