Job description
Short Stay Surgery is a 17 bed unit that offers exceptional elective/acute care to surgical patients.

As an integral member of the team, you will provide support to nursing and medical staff in the direct provision of patient care.
To provide a range of healthcare and non-nursing duties, ensuring an efficient and effective service to the ward and patients at all times.

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• To ensure that all patients, visitors and staff are treated in a courteous, professional and caring manner and receive prompt assistance when required.
• To promote equality for all individuals, taking into consideration their cultural and religious beliefs, customs and values.
• To promote patient independence and maintain the individual’s dignity at all times.
• To adhere to hospital policy in relation to patient confidentiality at all times.
• To be aware of their responsibilities under the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act. Care should be taken in all aspects of work to ensure that these and other safety regulations, e.g. C.O.S.H.H. and Manual Handling Policy are adhered.
• To report any accidents and/or incidents occurring to patients, visitors, staff or oneself according to hospital policies.
• To report any suspicious circumstances/individuals/packages immediately to Senior Sister/Nurse in Charge or Site Manager.
• To be aware of procedures to be followed in the case of Fire, Cardiac Arrest and any other emergencies.
• To be aware that you should not become involved in any financial matters with, or on behalf of, a patient or relative, e.g. witnessing a Will, receipt of gifts etc. and to adhere to hospital policy on this issue.
• To adhere to the Trust Values.
MAIN DUTIES AND KEY TASKS:
You will be in training and will work under supervision until competency for the following tasks has been achieved and agreed by the departmental manager:
• To enable patients to maintain their personal hygiene and appearance
by assisting patients with bathing, dressing, oral hygiene, bed making etc.
• To enable/facilitate patients to meet their own hygiene needs.
• To contribute to the movement and comfort of patients by encouraging and assisting patients in mobilisation.
• To assist with the movement of patients, for which instruction has been given, taking into consideration patient comfort and safety.
• To use equipment, for which instruction has been given, to mobilise/move patients.
• To assist patients to achieve physical comfort.
• To recognise the risks to patients who are not able to change their own position.
• To identify and report possible problems and changes in a patient’s condition.
• To enable patients to eat and drink by assisting in menu selection, liaising with trained staff regarding special diets and being sensitive to cultural requirements.
• To serve patients meals and beverages, removing all dirty utensils from patient areas.
• To record fluid intake/output as required.
• To contribute to the management of patient continence by encouraging patients to maintain continence.
• To empty catheter and stoma bags as directed.
• To receive, transmit, store and receive information relating to the delivery of a care service by keeping the team leader informed of all changes in a patient’s condition.
• To assist with preparing all relevant paperwork is ready prior to patient admission.
• To assist with the updating of clinical IT systems.
• To answer the department telephone and record/deliver messages accurately.
• To provide clerical support where required.
• To monitor the efficient storage of supplies and the maintenance of appropriate stock levels.
• To contribute to the health, safety and security of patients and their environment by ensuring the tidiness and cleanliness of patient bed areas and associated equipment.
• To strip, clean and make beds/couches/trolleys, after patients’ discharge.
• Dealing with the disposal of soiled linen and refuse as per hospital policy.
• Following hospital policies with regard to the control of infection.
• Monitoring and checking all ward equipment and ensuring that the appropriate requisitions for any repairs are completed and that the team leader is informed.
• To ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of the patient during escort duties; such as transferring from one area to another; or when undertaking a messenger service to other parts of the Trust.
• To assist in the rehabilitation of patients, utilising physical and psychological stimulus and appropriate resources.
• To assist with Last Offices where and when required.
• To assist in maintaining the high standards of the department by contributing towards individual and team objectives.
• To carry out other duties required by the Unit Manager commensurate with the grade.
