Overview

Applicants are invited to apply for the post of Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology based at a General Hospital in Berkshire.
The post holder will be supported by a junior doctor and a middle grade doctor. This job plan allows the post holder to deliver approximately 8 PA’s of direct clinical care and 2 SPA’s in addition to the on-call commitment which is 1:6. There is a hot day system when the post holder will be on call 24hrs, onsite from 9-5 covering emergencies and non-resident on call 5pm-9am, thus allowing for meaningful consultant work load and role. This is a 10 PA Job plan.
The Royal County of Berkshire, named due to the presence of Windsor Castle, is located to the west of London in the M4 corridor with none of the county further than around ten miles from the motorway.
Navigable by water as much as land, The River Thames flows through the north east of the county while the Kennet and Avon Canal runs across the south of Berkshire, through Hungerford and Newbury where it meets the Thames in Reading.
Spanning 487 square miles. The geographic county occupies the valleys of the middle Thames and its tributary, the Kennet, immediately to the west of London. It is divided into six unitary authorities: Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, West Berkshire, Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham. Much of West Berkshire sits within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which also comprises the Ridgeway National Trail.
In 2019, the total population of Berkshire county was 915k and it increased by 114k people since 2002. That's 14.2% population growth. Population average age was 38.7 and it increased by 1.8 years since 2002. The county was ageing faster than England and Wales in which the age grew by 1.6 years in the same period. The population was growing faster than population in England and Wales which grew by 13.0%.
Department
The Obstetrics and Gynaecological Department based at the hospital is run by a highly-motivated team providing both out and inpatient obstetrics and gynaecological services.
All consultants are required to contribute to service development aligned with national and local expectations and needs. There is a monthly meeting between consultants and service managers to facilitate this requirement. The Trust aims to design and implement services, policies and measures that meet the diverse needs of our service, population and workforce, ensuring that none are placed at a disadvantage over others.
Gynaecological services include Urogynaecology, Colposcopy, Early pregnancy and Emergency Gynaecological services. Benign Gynaecological operative and laparoscopic services along with Infertility services (except IVF) are provided at the hospital. Cancer services include diagnostic work up and early endometrial cancers being operated at the hospital. The service is linked with the Southern sector Berkshire Cancer network with weekly MDT meetings.
Ambulatory operative services are undertaken in a purpose built outpatient clinic that caters for ambulatory procedures ie . Endometrial ablations and morcelators for endometrial polyp and diagnostic hysteroscopies. The Centre also houses the Colposcopy department. This centre has provision for ultrasound in cases of post-menopausal bleeding and heavy menstrual bleeding. The ultrasound services are provided by ultrasonographers from the radiology department. Urogynaecology services include urodynamics and uroflow with EPAC system in use.
Obstetric service includes general obstetric high risk clinics, medical disorders, endocrine l and diabetic clinic, peri-natal mental health clinic. The service is linked with the Oxford and Slough and West Berkshire maternity network.
The department has approximately 1800 deliveries catering for both high risk consultant led service as well as low risk team midwifery services. The unit is supported by a dedicated maternity theatre staffed 24 hours as well as an Intensive care and high dependency Unit. However due to current constraints of covid-19 our inpatient and birth care is currently provided in our host sites. When our 7 inpatient Maternity services return we will be returning full obstetric and midwifery led services to all women in West Berkshire providing continuity of care.
General Duties- guideline only
The successful applicant will join a team of 5 enthusiastic and dedicated Consultants who deliver a range of Obstetric and Gynaecological services. The job holder will contribute to the general Obstetrics and Gynaecology clinical work including a 1 in 6 emergency cover rota.
The service have full middle-grade and SHO tiers . It would be preferable for the post holder to have a special interest in Colposcopy, Urogynaecology and Medical Education as this would complement the specialisms already held within the department. However all special interests will be considered.
The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly to deliver high quality care with particular emphasis on:
· Further develop services in accordance with standards set by the RCOG, NICE and other relevant national bodies.
· Develop appropriate services and techniques required to meet clinical needs within available resources, and work with colleagues to identify additional resources needed to develop the service.
· Accept shared responsibility for the care of admitted patients under the care of consultant colleagues, including the undertaking of daily ward rounds.
· Teaching is an integral component of the role and the appointees will contribute to ongoing in-house staff training shared with consultant colleagues. Appointees will be encouraged to participate in instructing on such courses.
· Supervise junior medical staff during working hours.
· Developing and maintaining robust systems to ensure effective clinical audit in the speciality as appropriate, inclusive of undertaking personal audit.
Job Plan
Regular job planning meetings will be undertaken with the post holder to ensure that the appointee is remunerated for any additional activities undertaken and that the job plan accurately reflects the overall workload undertaken by the post holder.
The supporting professional activities (SPAs) allocation within the provisional
job plan is an illustrative guide and will
be finalised following individual agreement with successful candidates. Further discussion on
supporting professional activities will depend on the Trust's requirements and the individual's particular
expertise.

Salary
This is as described in the Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions, in line with the Consultant Contract (2003). The current full time salary scale (as of July 2020) ranges from £84,559 - £114,003 a year with eight thresholds.
The on call supplement is Category A and attracts a supplement of 5% of basic salary.Office Accommodation
Office accommodation will be provided for the appointee with secretarial support.Management Responsibility
All Consultants are required to attend the monthly Directorate Meetings. Post holders will be expected to share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate. As part of the Consultant Team, the consultant will offer mentoring support and lead the existing clinical team through, one-to-one support, individual case management and complex cases, identifying development needs and suggesting CPD (Continuous Professional Development) opportunities and responding to clinical enquiries via e-mail and telephone.
Teaching/Research
The consultant will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. Teaching will take place during programmed activities and flexibly at other times.
·To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations arising out of GMC and related requirements
·To supervise and manage the work of his/her junior medical staff and participate in the training and development of these staff to the standards required by the Royal Colleges.Clinical Governance & Audit
The consultant will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. There are 6 half day clinical governance meetings per annum which substitute regular fixed sessions. There is a weekly consultant meeting before MDT on Friday to discuss any issues during the week and to plan for next week.
Personal & Professional Development
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust.
The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
Medical revalidation is the process by which the General Medical Council (GMC) confirms the continuation of a doctor’s licence to practise in the UK, provides greater assurance to patients, the public, employers and other healthcare professionals that licensed doctors are up-to-date and fit to practise. It is a key component of a range of measures designed to improve the quality of care for patients.
The Trust supports Royal College guidance on provision of mentors for new consultants in line with GMC recommendations. All newly appointed consultant staff are provided with a list of locally trained mentors who are available for ongoing support as required.
