About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities and talented staff are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.
About the role
The stability of the electron and photon beams at Diamond is key to the delivery of world leading science. With a multi-million-pound upgrade project underway, known as Diamond-II, the much stricter beam stability requirements of sub-micro electron beam stability over a circumference of 560m, will require increased dedicated efforts to maintain such high standards.
We now have a new opportunity for a Senior Vibration Engineer or Physicist (internally titled ‘Senior Engineer - Vibration Specialist’) to provide expert technical knowledge and hands-on evaluation to support Diamond’s vibration and stability. This is a cross functional role based in Diamond’s Technical Division, which involves working closely with the Diagnostics group and the Science Division, to measure and assess the effects of mechanical vibration on the photon and electron beams on the beamlines and particle accelerator.
Your role will be to initially support, and then lead, a range of vibration and stability projects. You will be measuring and evaluating the stability of key components of the Diamond-II synchrotron upgrade, including diagnostic equipment supports and our girder prototypes.
The role will involve stability problem solving of Diamond systems and equipment, including developing passive and active damping solutions using 3D CAD modelling software, Finite Element Analysis & Dynamics simulation.
Other responsibilities will include:
About you
Suitable candidates will have a good understanding of the physical and mechanical principles behind vibration and stability, together with a broad general physics knowledge.
You should have a good knowledge and understanding of sensors for vibration measurements and data collection processes and equipment. You should also have some experience with hands-on, practical work using measurement equipment and instrumentation.
You should be qualified to degree level in Physics or Engineering or demonstrate significant equivalent experience.
You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff and facility users at all levels.
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays and 2 annual volunteering days, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
