Job description

Cover Supervisor
Location: Selby, North Yorkshire
Salary: £90 - £100 per day
Start Date: April 2024

GSL Education is seeking a Cover Supervisor for an Ofsted graded ‘Good’ School in Selby, North Yorkshire. This is a full-time position, covering staff absences across Years 7 to 11, and across all curriculum areas. This is a great opportunity for a Trainee Teacher coming to the end of their PGCE and awaiting Qualified Teacher Status, a Higher Level Teaching Assistant looking for a step up in their career, or an experienced Cover Supervisor.

About the School:

  • A co-educational secondary school in North Yorkshire, with its main catchment areas as Selby and villages from the Selby District, including Thorpe Willoughby, Hambleton, Monk Fryston, Cawood and Wistow.
  • A thriving, successful, vibrant, and energetic secondary school, recognised by the DofE as one of the 100 most improved schools in England.
  • The school has a progressive new digital learning portal which allows students to study at home which contains many links all in one place to various revision websites, student resources, Google Classroom and many more.
  • In their most recent Ofsted inspection, inspectors noted that ‘the school is developing effective curriculum plans. Pupils access a deep range of knowledge and skills. Opportunities to revisit previous learning are built into the curriculum. Pupils demonstrate that they can remember what they have learned in previous lessons regularly.’
  • Ofsted also reported that ‘adults in the school are proud to work there. They are committed to keeping pupils safe. Leaders carefully consider the workload of staff. This is reflected in the staff survey, where it is reported that staff well-being is a clear consideration of leaders.’
About the Job Role of a Cover Supervisor:
  • The main role of a Cover Supervisor is to manage the classroom in the Teacher’s absence.
  • The Class Teacher will provide all the materials and tools needed for the lessons, ready for the Cover Supervisor to deliver.
  • You will also assist in preparing the learning environment and the materials required.
  • You will set and maintain the high classroom standards and expectations to motivate and challenge students whilst managing behaviour effectively and promoting a positive learning environment.
Cover Supervisor Requirements:
  • Being a Cover Supervisor requires flexibility, as the position requires you to cover different subject areas.
  • The nature of the job also means lots of variety.
  • Although not actively teaching, it is important for a Cover Supervisor to have the skills and confidence needed to keep the class motivated and focused so they can work on the activities set and prepared for them.
  • The role requires you to support pupils as they work through the lesson and to understand how to help them to complete tasks, where needed.
  • You should be a confident leader with charisma to engage young people and be an effective behaviour manager.
If you are thinking of becoming a teacher or are considering working with children and want to gain classroom experience, then working as a Cover Supervisor is an excellent opportunity. It is also something you could consider if you are a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Higher Level Teaching Assistant HLTA) and want to gain more classroom practice.
