Job description

We are looking for an Education Programme Co-ordinator to develop and deliver a wide range of outreach and engagement activities for local schools and school age students as part of a new education programme funded by the John Innes Foundation.

As well as being a central point of contact for teachers to access the activities on offer, the role will involve identifying and supporting staff to engage with schools, and to capture, monitor and evaluate activities to demonstrate and measure impact.
The successful candidate will join the JIC Communication and Engagement team and will also work closely with key affiliated partners to delivering specific elements of the programme.

Main purpose of job: This role will co-ordinate and administer a programme of existing and new educational and engagement activities, events and opportunities for schools and school age students in the East of England.The role will deliver the education programme activities to primary and secondary school children on themes relating to the National Curriculum and current research at the John Innes Centre.

Key Relationships

The post sits within the Communications and Engagement team and reports to the Head of Communications and Engagement.

Internal: Staff and students from across the JIC (including senior scientists, post-doctoral scientist, research assistants, technicians), Communications Manager, Communications Officers and the Head of Communications and Engagement
External : partners from across Norwich Research Park, other educational bodies and scientific institutions, schools (teachers, administrators and students), John Innes Foundation and the public

Main Activities & Responsibilities

Programme Co-ordination: Organise, develop and co-ordinate a programme of education activities related to plant science and microbiology. Inspire the next generation to study science and consider a scientific career. Network development : Build a strong internal and external network of delivery partners who share the vision of the education programme Network Development: Establish and manage relationships with schools and colleges and co-ordinate the delivery of outreach activities to prospective students both in schools and on our campus.

Network Development: Organise training and promote volunteering opportunities to enable interested staff and students to develop new skills and contribute to the education programme. This will include training on using evaluation tools to ensure data is captured to feed into ongoing impact monitoring.

Evaluation, Reporting and Monitoring: Work with partners to evaluate and report on activities, to capture evidence of impact for monitoring and reporting, write case studies and develop content for blogs and social media. Evaluation, Reporting and Monitoring: In collaboration with social scientists and education experts, design an evaluation framework to assess and report on education activities. Funding Proposals: Scope and develop new projects and collaborations and apply for external funding with the aim of co-funding activities to support the education programme. Other: As agreed with the line manager, any other duties commensurate with the nature of the post

You will have a degree in a relevant subject. The post holder will understand the importance of STEM qualifications and the role of informal science learning in building Science Capital and they will have demonstrable experience in developing content, events and activities that are informative, accurate and engaging.

It is advantageous if the successful candidate has experience in delivering practical science sessions to large groups, e.g. as a teacher, with a science organisation or within the museum and engagement centre sector.
