The role
As a Principal Nuclear Inspector, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This role gives you the autonomy to provide independent oversight of nuclear related activities to the business at the highest level, internally and externally.
Day-to-day accountabilities:
- Provision of independent oversight of nuclear related activities, promoting attitudes and behaviours that encourage constructive challenge
- Provision of independent advice and guidance to the Chair of the Board, the Devonport Royal Dockyard Ltd (DRDL) Board, Managing Directors and the wider organisation
- Supporting an effective interface with the external regulators (including internal stakeholders) in relation to nuclear, radiological, conventional, environmental, environmental permitting, fire and, security of nuclear and hazardous materials matters for facilities across the site
- Leading the independent assessment of the business’s emergency arrangements exercise program
- Acting as a role model for health and safety behaviours
The Principal Nuclear Inspector role is full-time, 36-hours per week, based at HMNB Devonport with flexible, hybrid working options.

Experience of the Principal Nuclear Inspector:
- Experience of implementing, advising, or regulating HSE arrangements
- Good analytical skills to support critical reviews of performance
- Detailed knowledge of LCs and ACs and how they are complied with on site
- Track record of regulatory engagement would be an advantage
Qualifications of the Principal Nuclear Inspector:
- Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution or able to demonstrate performance and / or experience at an equivalent professional level
- A degree, or equivalent, in an appropriate scientific or engineering subject
- Qualification or significant experience in auditing and investigations at Business Unit, Company or Corporate level
- National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health Diploma – desirable
The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
